3. Reading Comprehension
When will we have robots? We already have many kinds of robots! Industries use a variety of robots and now robots are becoming more common in the home.

The Husqvarna company now makes the Auto Mower, a lawn mowing robot. The robot has sensors which detect where objects are in the yard and it maneuvers around them. The robot can cut the grass while you relax on the patio with a glass of lemonade! Also, Eureka has a prototype of a 6. robot vacuum cleaner. Like the robot lawn mover, the vacuum cleaner automatically detects where the furniture is and vacuums around it.

Robots

Cars are becoming robots now that many cars have GPS (Global Positioning Systems) on them. A car with a GPS system can give you directions on how to go somewhere, tell you where the closest gas station is, and, some day in the future, will drive itself. You will take a nap or read while the car drives itself to your destination. We even have robotic pets now. The Sony company makes a robotic dog named Aibo that can sit, stand, and walk like a regular dog but can also communicate and take pictures! Aibo understands certain commands (like a dog does) such as "Sit down", "Stand up", "Turn right", etc. If you ask Aibo a question such as "How old are you?", its eyes will flash the number of years old it is. Aibo is also a great guard dog. He can patrol the yard and take pictures (with a built in camera) of anything suspicious.

Changes on Earth Since life first appeared on the Earth four billion years ago, there have been tremendous changes. Ice ages have come and gone and volcanoes have erupted. Earthquakes have shattered ancient mountains and changed the course of rivers. Some species have been displaced by others which are more favoured by new environments. Nowadays scientists are studying the changes which are likely to take place in 50 years time. Here are some of them:

If we cannot feed 6 billion people today, how will we satisfy the needs of 8 billion people or more by 2030? Global food shortages will become much more serious than today, leading to poverty. C. Energy Revolution Renewable energy technologies are now ready to be used and will meet the worlds energy demand by 2030. We will find new energy sources like wind and solar power that wont pollute and will never run out. They are also less expensive compared to other sources of energy. D. High Technology Wireless technology will be everywhere. There will be no wires on and behind your desk. Well be able to control people around us with a tiny microchip and through the access to the Internet. Here are some more predictions about the future: - Electric currents applied to the soil will make valuable plants grow larger and faster. - There will be no street cars in our large cities. All traffic will be below or high above the ground. - People will be able to see the bus coming closer to their stop by means of a web-site.
