Grade/Section: Grade X- St. Michael the Archangel Date: _______________ ______
Subject: Mathematics X
Activity Type: Active Learning Control No. : 2
Activity Title: ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
Learning Competency: Illustrates an Arithmetic Sequence
Learning Target/s: 1. Identify the common difference.
2. Determine the nth term of the given sequence
Reference/s: Intermediate Algebra
Author: Soledad Jose-Dilao

Concept Notes
The first n terms of an arithmetic sequence with a1 as the first term and d as common difference are
a1, a1 + d, a1 + 2d, …, a1 + (n – 1)d
If a1 and d are known, it is easy to find any term in arithmetic sequence by using the rule
an = a1 + (n-1) d

Example 1: What is the 14th term of the arithmetic Example 2: The first term a1 of an arithmetic
sequence 5, 7, 9, 11…? sequence is 3 and the common difference
is 2. Find the 9th term.
Solution 1 (find the common difference):
a1 = 5; a2 = 7 Solution: a1 = 3; d = 2; n=9
d = a2 – a1 an = a1 + (n-1) d
d=7–5 a9 = 3 + (9-1) 2
d=2 a9 = 3 + (8) 2
Solution 2: a1 = 5; d = 2; n = 14 a9 = 3 + 16
an = a1 + (n-1) d a9 = 19
a14 = 5 + (14-1) 2  Therefore, the 9th term is 19.
a14 = 5 + (13) 2
a14 = 5 + 26
a14 = 31
 Therefore, the 14th term is 31.

Exercises
Directions: Find the indicated term in each arithmetic sequence.
1. Find the 5th term of the arithmetic sequence 17, 13, 9, …
2. The 9th term of an arithmetic sequence is 19. If the common difference is 2, find
the first term.
