HARBOR INFRASTRUCTURE INVENTORIES

South Haven Harbor, Michigan

Harbor Location: South Haven Harbor is located on the east shore of Lake Michigan, 77 miles northeast of
Chicago, IL.
Authority: River and Harbor Acts of 11 Aug 1888, 3 Mar 1905, 30 Aug 1935.
Project Description: South Haven is authorized as a commercial harbor, but its current uses are primarily
recreational. There is approximately 3,100 feet of maintained Federal channel and over 4,300 feet of maintain
breakwaters, piers, and revetments.
Traffic: No commerce reported.
Transportation Importance: This project serves primarily commercial fishing and recreational navigation
interests. The local community has established a significant infrastructure around the harbor facilities that
generates income from harbor users and visitors to the area.

Summary of Impact: With the large amount of marinas and private slips along the shores of the South Haven
Harbor and the Black River, a failure or breach along the federal structure leading to increased wave action
would have a significant impact on many of the boats that dock on the river. Many of the marinas and slips are
located directly on the Black River, and they do have additional protection other than the Federal structures.
Other than the marinas, a failure could also affect the houses that are located on the channel. A failure could
cause the foundations of those houses to become unstable.

Examples of Protected Infrastructure:


1. South Beach: Immediately adjacent to the south structure is the City of South Haven- South Beach. This
public beach has access to the boardwalk along the south side of the river.

2. North Beach: The City of South Haven also maintains a beach on the north side of the harbor, it is known as
North Beach. On the east end of the beach are several houses.
3. Channel Front houses: Along the north side of the South Haven federal structures, there are approximately
eight channel front houses from the beach to the All Seasons Marina.

4. United States Coast Guard – South Haven Station: A USCG Station is on the north side of the South
Haven federal structures. The station is a small wood building, and no Coast Guard vessels were visible on site.
5. Northside Municipal Marina: The Northside Municipal Marina is along the north side of the South Haven
Harbor. This marina has 97 seasonal and transient slips that are permanent wood docks. The Northside
Municipal Marina has no additional protection other than the federal structures, and is in front of the USCG.

6. Southside Municipal Marina: The Southside Municipal Marina is located on the south side of the South
Haven Harbor directly opposite the Northside Municipal Marina. The Southside Municipal Marina has 40
transient slips that are all permanent wood docks. There is an additional breakwater protecting this marina and
an administration building on site.
7. All Seasons Marina: All Seasons Marina is a privately owned marina located on the north side of South
Haven Harbor. It has 60 slips and in/out storage for 80 boats. The slips are floating docks made of wood,
aluminum, steel, and plastic.

8. Michigan Maritime Museum & the Museum Marina: The Michigan Maritime Museum and the Museum
Marina are located on the north end of the South Haven Harbor. The Museum Marina is a municipal marina,
maintained by the City of South Haven with 30 fixed wood slips.
Potential Impact Area: The following graphic displays property parcels that could be impacted within various
zones defined by different setbacks from the shoreline behind existing Federal coastal structures. Values are
based on real property tax assessments from these parcels, and don’t reflect any detailed coastal zone damage
assessments. Figures simply reflect property values at various setbacks.
