CCB 241 - Assignment 1 - Due On 21 Feb. 2023

This document outlines 7 questions for an assignment on mechanical properties of materials. The questions involve plotting stress-strain diagrams from given data and determining properties such as proportional limit, modulus of elasticity, yield stress, ultimate stress, fracture stress, percentage elongation, modulus of resilience, modulus of toughness, and ductile or brittle behavior. Questions also involve calculating elongation, stress, strain, and cross-sectional area changes for loaded bars and beams.

Assignment 1
Due: Tuesday, 21 February 2023
Question 1
1. The following data were recorded during a tensile test of a 14.0 mm diameter steel rod. The
gauge length was 50 mm.

Plot the stress-strain diagram and determine the following mechanical properties: (a) proportional
limit; (b) modulus of elasticity; (c) yield stress; (d) ultimate stress; (e) fracture stress; (f) percentage
elongation; (g) modulus of resilience; and (h) modulus of toughness.
Question 2
2. A specimen of a methacrylate plastic is tested in tension at room temperature (see
figure), producing the stress-strain data tabulated below. Plot the stress-strain curve
and determine the proportional limit, modulus of elasticity (i.e., the slope of the
initial part of the stress-strain curve), and yield stress at 0.2% offset. Is the material
ductile or brittle?

Question 3 Table 3: Load vs elongation
The data shown in the Table 3 were
obtained from a tensile test of high-
strength steel. The test specimen had a
diameter of 13 mm and a gage length of
50 mm. At fracture, the elongation
between the gage marks was 3.0 mm and
the minimum diameter was 10.7 mm.

Plot the conventional stress-strain curve

for the steel and determine the
proportional limit, modulus of elasticity
(i.e., the slope of the initial part of the
stress-strain curve), yield stress at 0.1%
offset, ultimate stress, percent elongation
in 50 mm, and percent reduction in area.

Question 4
4. The bar ABC in Fig. (a) consists of two cylindrical segments. The material of the bar has the
stress-strain diagram shown in Fig. (b). Determine the approximate elongation of the bar caused
by the 20-kN axial load.
Question 5

A steel bar AD shown in Figure Q5 has a cross-sectional area, A = 250 mm2 and is
loaded by forces P1 = 7500 N, P2 = 5300 N and P3 = 5800 N.

a) Assuming that the modulus of elasticity is E = 200 GPa, calculate the overall change
in length of the bar stating whether it is elongation or shortening.
b) Calculate the new value of P3 such that bar ABCD does not change in length
provided that forces P1 and P2 remain unchanged?
c) If P1 = 7500 N, P2 = 5300 N and P3 = 5800 N are applied as shown and the cross-
sectional area of segments BC and CD remain 250 mm2, what revised cross-sectional
area for segment AB will result in no change of length of bar ABCD.
Question 6
A bar made of structural steel having the stress-strain diagram shown in the
Figure 6 has a length of 1.5 m. The yield stress of the steel is 290 MPa and the
slope of the initial linear part of the stress-strain curve (modulus of elasticity) is
207 GPa.
The bar is loaded axially until it elongates 7.6 mm, and then the load is
removed. How does the final length of the bar compare with its original length?
(Hint: Assume a partially elastic behaviour).

Question 7
A circular bar of magnesium alloy is 750 mm long. The stress-strain diagram in
Figure 7 for the material is shown in the figure. The bar is loaded in tension to
an elongation of 6.0 mm, and then the load is removed.

(a) What is the permanent set of the bar?

(b) If the bar is reloaded, what is the proportional limit?
