2a. Identify what a compass rose is. A compass rose is a figure on a compass, some maps,
and nautical charts. It is used to show the four basic geographic directions: north, south,
east, and west. This symbol has been used by mapmakers since ancient times. The term
“rose” comes from the figure’s compass points, which look a little like the petals of a
rose. It was originally used to tell the direction of the winds and was sometimes called a
wind rose. The compass rose is often located in a corner of a map. Reading a compass
rose is a lot like reading a clock. You start at the top, which is where north is located.
Never Eat Soggy Waffles!
Never = North (where we usually face)
Eat = East
Soggy = South
Waffles = West
Identify it on a map. Circle on worksheet. Search for it on the AAA map.
2a. Use a compass to ID north. How does a compass work? A compass has a magnetized
needle that sits in fluid and points to the earth’s magnetic (south)pole which is very close
to the geographic north pole (~10 degrees). Wherever you are, it will always point in that
direction unless you are at magnetic pole. To use it, you have to hold the compass flat so
the needle can move freely. Make sure that no other magnetic objects are nearby that
will interfere. Point the red needle to the North symbol on the compass. Then whatever
direction you intend to go, point your body towards that way.
Game. Jump to face the direction.

1. Locate where you live.
a. On AAA map, look on the index for the street that you live on. Search for it
alphabetically. If there are multiple streets in different cities, check for the one in
your city. If it is a N, E, W, S street, make sure it matches. Find the grid
coordinates and use them to pinpoint the quadrant your street is on. Think about
what 2 cross streets you live between to identify the block where your house
would be. Are there landmarks near your house? Parks, fire stations, schools,
hospitals? Use the key to find the ones nearest to your house.
b. Extra activity. With your partner, describe the direction to go from your house to
theirs on the map.
c. City planners try to build cities in blocks so streets are easy to navigate.
Sometimes the streets are diagonal because of highways or trains or waterways
built. Use the paper to draw a map to your house. Use the map here to draw the
outline of the streets in your neighborhood. Make a key to identify landmarks
such as trees, parks, buildings, water. You can finish up at home.
Requirement 4: Hike with family or at camping trip. Look at a map to determine the starting
point and ending point. Use NESW directions to determine your route. Bring your compass to
figure out what direction you are going and how to get to the final destination.
