Mapisi Rock

I. Introduction

The Philippines has no shortage of exquisite views of the sea, and Barangay Ambucao,
Santiago, Ilocos Sur, is no exception. As it is bordered by the West Philippine Sea, it has
several seaside attractions across the province. One of its more famous destinations is Mapisi
Rock, which is also called “Biak na Bato.”As described by its name mapisi is an Ilocano
word meaning “to cut” Mapisi Rock is a towering formation that has been cut in the middle
by natural forces. The result is a very unique vantage point that lets you be surrounded by
jaw-dropping rock formations and gives you a unique view of the sea.
When you arrive at the site, Mapisi Rock will be surrounded by a long white-sand beach,
already giving you a glimpse of the incredible views you’ll find within the formation. You’ll
also find various other smaller rock formations in the surrounding area.
From afar, Mapisi Rock serves as a towering structure looming over the whole beach. You’ll
also notice several trees that have turned the top of the rocks into their home, adding even
more to the site’s natural wonder.
Your experience won’t be complete without setting foot in between the two rocks. Surround
yourself with Mapisi Rock’s towering structures, and treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime
view of the clear blue sea. You wouldn’t want to miss getting a photo!. Entrance fee are
primarily designed to increase funding available for the areas conservation activities, entrance
fee provides the greatest revenue contributions to easiest fee to collect, entrance fees charge
for entering at the destination.
II. Background of the Destination

Derived from the Ilocano word mapisi meaning “to cut,” Mapisi Rock (or “Biak-na-
Bato”) is a towering boulder that has been cut in the middle by natural forces, probably by an
earthquake. The base of the rock has also been undercut by sea waves. It is located along the
white sand Apatot Beach and is just 4 kms. away from the National Highway. The area
around the rock has been developed into a picnic site, with lighting, paved walkways and
stairs plus public toilets and concrete picnic tables and sheds painted in Santorini-inspired
colors of blue and white. Offshore is a small rock formation which resembles a dragon’s
head. Mapisi Rock is a favorite of visitors who usually climb the rock for some buwis buhay
shots. It is comprised of large boulder of coral rocks that is said to be “broken down”
geologically and formed a cave-like structure.
II: Objectives

To promote economic development

- One of the primary objectives of this plan is to promote economic development by

generating income and employment opportunities for locals. When tourists visit a particular
destination, they spend money on various goods and services, which in turn contributes to the
local economy.
An important aspect of good tourism is the realization of creating better places for people to
live in and better places for people to visit. In order to realize this, one of the key elements is
preventing leakage. Making sure that money spent by tourists actually stays in the
destination.
Eating and drinking in local restaurants and café’s directly benefits the local economy for the
obvious reasons. It ensures the money stays in the destination and that the local owner and
employees financially benefit. It also directly supports the local farmers and food producers
in the area. Besides supporting the local economy, eating locally is good for the environment.

To protect natural and cultural resources

- Natural and Cultural resources play an important role in our lives. They are essential to the
world’s economic, social and environmental well-being. We rely on natural resources for
food, water, fuel, and much more. But beyond their daily utility, natural resources play a
significant role in keeping the environment healthy and sustainable. The best way to preserve
your cultural heritage, whatever it may be, is to share it with others. Cultural heritage and
natural history of a nation has a very high value and is unique. It is an identity that can be
introduced to the world.
It is evident that cultural heritage creates unique tourist attractions for a place or country
which in turn creates jobs and spur economic growth for its people. Preservation and
restoration create skilled jobs which increase surrounding property values and encourage
development of communities within these areas.

To support sustainable development

Support sustainable development, which involves meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This means that
tourism activities should be conducted in an environmentally responsible manner and should
also take into account the social and economic impacts on local communities. Sustainable
development practices help countries grow in ways that adapt to the challenges posed by
climate change, which will in turn help to protect important natural resources for ours and
future generations.
