STRUCTURAL REPAIR MANUAL
WINDOWS — GENERAL
1. General
This chapter gives information/data on the structural material and the allowable damage for the flight
compartment windows, which are the windshields and side windows, and the passenger compartment
windows.
2. Classification of Structure
Windows are classified as primary structure.
3. Stations
For the location of the windows refer to SRM 53–00–00.
4. Damage Definitions
The Windows and their seals should be periodically inspected for defects and erosion. A window must
be replaced when it has greater damage than the maximum limits defined in PPG Industries Inc. CMM.
The definitions of window defects used in this chapter are as follows:
A. Chip
A small piece that breaks away from the primary material. The area that stays looks like a
clamshell.
B. Crack
A narrow split caused by a break in the material. A crack has a high depth−to−width ratio.
C. Crazing
Small breaks or splits in the surface that can only be found visually.
D. Edge and Hole Crazing
Crazing at mainply (i.e. outer, core, or inner ply) edges and/or holes can cause local laminar
separations which look like small mainply delaminations.
E. Delamination and Interlayer Bubbles
Separation of the mainply from the interlayer. Delamination and interlayer bubbles make shiny
reflections.
F. Discoloration
Black or brown discoloration along the electrical bus bars, lead wires, or heating films.
G. Distortion
Changed proportions between the actual size of an object and its visual image when you see it
through defects in the window.
H. Gouge
A continuous sharp or smooth channel−like groove with a cross−sectional area that changes.
I. Hazing
A cloudy or dull appearance on the surface of, or internal to the mainply panel.
J. Deep Scratch
A deep scratch is found when you rub the surface with your fingertip. A deep scratch is a sharp
groove more than 0.004 in (0.10 mm) deep with a build−up of material on the two sides of the
groove
K. Minor Scratch
A minor scratch is found with the fingernail but cannot be felt with the fingertip. Minor scratches
do not have a build−up of material on one of the two sides of the groove, and are between 0.001
and 0.004 in (0.03 and 0.10 mm) deep.

STRUCTURAL REPAIR MANUAL
L. Hairline Scratch
A hairline scratch is found when you rub a fingernail across a surface. A hairline scratch is less
than 0.001 in (0.02 mm) deep.
M. Interlayer Split
When there is an interlayer split the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer moves apart in a plane
normal to the transparent laminae.
5. Optical Area Definitions
The visual areas in a window are given as critical, semi−critical, and non−critical as follows:
A. Non−Critical
The outer area which extends 1.00 in (25.4 mm) in from the edge of the visual area. This includes
the sensing elements and terminal areas.
B. Semi−Critical
The area which extends 1.00 in (25.4 mm) in from the non−critical area. This includes the sensing
elements and terminal areas.
C. Critical Area
The critical area is all of the visual area except the 2.00 in (50.8 mm) outer area specified as
Non−Critical and Semi−Critical.

FLIGHT COMPARTMENT AND PASSENGER COMPARTMENT WINDOWS − REPAIRS
1. General
This section gives information to repair damage to windshields, side windows and passenger
compartment windows. The windows and their seals should be periodically inspected for defects and
erosion. A window must be replaced when it has greater damage than the maximum limits defined in
PPG Industries Inc. CMM. The windows can be repaired when they are installed or removed from the
aircraft.
For Flight Compartment Windows − Repairs, refer to PPG Industries Inc. CMM.
For Passenger Compartment Windows − Repairs, refer to PPG Industries Inc. CMM.

FLIGHT COMPARTMENT WINDOWS − GENERAL
1. General
This section gives general information on the flight compartment windows, which consist of two
windshields and two side windows. The flight compartment windows let the crew see out of the flight
compartment, thus visual clarity is critical. Refer to Figure 1 for the breakdown of the flight
compartment window.
For Windshields, refer to SRM 56−11−00.
For Side Windows, refer to SRM 56−12−00.
