Week 3 Deflection of Electrons in An Electric Field

The document summarizes an experiment on the deflection of electrons in an electric field using a Cathode Ray Tube. Key points: 1) The experiment utilized a Cathode Ray Tube with power supplies to accelerate electrons and produce an electric field across deflection plates. 2) Electrons pass through a slit in a positively charged barrier and their path is altered by the electric field of the deflection plates. 3) Data was collected on the displacement of electrons at different voltages applied to the deflection plates. The results show the distance electrons are pulled from their original path increases with higher voltages.

Deflection of Electrons in an Electric Field

Apparatus
Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). Two power supplies:
a) The first power supply model #33033 which is used to create an accelerating potential of
500V and to supply a voltage for the heating filament.
b) The second power supply is used to produce an electric potential across the deflecting
plates.

Introduction
The purpose of this experiment is to gain a better understanding about the concept of the
deflection of electrons in an electric field. To do this, we utilized a device called a Cathode Ray
tube. A cathode ray tube works by running a current through a coil, which produces heat, and
gives off electrons. There is a small slit in a positively charged barrier where a precise beam of
electrons can make it through. However, not all electrons make it through as some electrons
attract to the positive barriers. Those that make through the barrier have a velocity. They are
running through a positive and negatively charged deflection plates. The electrons are repelled
from the negatively charged plate and attracted to the positively charged one. This pulls them off
of tract and projects them onto the filament.
- First we connected the sources and Cathode Ray tube correctly
- Next we plugged values (increasing 5) from -30V – 0V for Sxx and documented results
- Then we switched to the Syy deflection plate and plugged the same values for -30V-0V
and documented results
- Then we switched polarities and redid the same steps for Sxx and Syy

Results
d= 1.94 mm

d= 1.605

Discussions and Conclusions

In the cathode ray tube, the electrons have a velocity. However, the velocity isn’t always
straight. The horizontal velocity won’t ever changes. However, the vertical velocity can. This is
because once the electron reaches the deflection plate, it is thrown off of its straight path. It
begins a parabolic path under the deflection plate as it is being pulled (Attracted) vertically to
the plate while moving horizontally. Once it reaches the end of the deflection plate, it resumes a
straight linear travel. As we added voltage, the attraction between the positively charged plate
and the electron increased, which caused more displacement from the origin

Questions
1. It represents the minimum distance that the deflection plates can be
separated.
2. The electric forces will be identical in strength because their charge will be
the same, just opposite direction. The acceleration will be quite different
because the proton is way heavier than the electron.
3. The force of gravity on the electron acts downward and the electric force on
the electron also in the downward direction. So, the net acceleration on the
electron changes.
