C.A.Bucher has defined Physical Education as an “Integral part of total educational process,
is a field of endeavour which has its aim — the development of physically, mentally,
emotionally and socially fit citizens through the medium of physical activities which have
been selected with a view to realise these outcomes.”
According to J.B.Nash. " Physical Education is that field of education which deals
with. big muscle activities and their related responses."
Its main aim is all-round development and it can be attained through different steps
or objectives:
Physical development
Our body is a kind of machine which grows and develops with regular physical
activities.physical development develops our neuromuscular responses which
lead to maximum organic development.
Mental development
Mental development is related to positive
houghts,ideas,behaviour,attitude,conduct,responce,etc.which improves the
psychologicsl balance of an individual.
Social development.
Physical education programs provide good opportunities and practical experience to
develop social processes.By participating in sports and games a player follows the
rules ,regulations,tradition,and laws of society.They develop Qualities like
friendship,Honesty,sincerity,tolerance,adjustment,leadership,etc
Emotional development
It is an important part of the optimum development of a man’s personality.Emotions
like love,hate,anger,aggressiveness,anxiety,etc must be expressed in a controlled
manner.physical education provides good opportunities to practice these.
Neuro-Muscular Development
This objective is centered with a better relationship between nervous
system. Physical Education provides ample opportunities for physical neuromuscular
coordination. Emotional Development: The emotional development of an individual is
also one of the major objectives of physical education.
Development of health
This develops healthy related habits through health education.this also provide
education the prevention and communicable diseases.
With time the trend of physical education in India is changing. It has gained lots of
importance with time and has evolved in itself to new dimensions and
platforms. Along with this the new generation has found new and keen interest in
the field of physical education.
