Causative FORM

This document discusses the causative form in English. The causative form uses "have" and a past participle verb to indicate that someone arranges for an action to be done by another. For example, "I had my car washed" means I arranged for my car to be washed, not that I washed it myself. The document provides examples of causative forms for different tenses, such as "She will have the dishes washed." It also includes exercises for learners to practice forming causative sentences.

Have smth.

done
This form is used when we want to say that we arrange for somebody else to
do something for us.

Get
What someone does for us
We use have + object + V3/ed form when we talk about someone doing
something for us which we ask or instruct them to do. It emphasises the
process/action rather than who performs it:

I had my car washed.

He would have his hair cut.
She must get her watch repaired.
Do you get your windows cleaned every month?
We’re having the house painted next week.

We can also use have + object + V3/ed form when something bad happens,
especially when someone is affected by an action which they did not cause:
They’ve had their car stolen.
The verb " have " carries the tense of the action.

The word order ( have / get + object + past participle ) is very important. How???

- Mark had his car cleaned. ( Mark arranged for somebody else to clean his car )
- Mark had cleaned his car. ( Mark cleaned his car himself )
