Titan Installation Guide v1 - 0

This document provides installation guidelines for the Titan reader and Avior antenna for electronic toll collection applications. It recommends installing two Avior antennas per lane at a height of 5.5-6.5 meters and angle of 10-20 degrees. The antennas should be spaced 1.6 meters apart and together provide full lane coverage. Charts show the antennas' radio frequency coverage in the x-axis (lane width) and y-axis (vehicle movement). Installers should perform a full lane mapping to verify coverage before operation.

6 Avior Antenna Installation
The recommendations provided in this section provide basic installation guidelines for a high-speed,
open road tolling (ORT) installation. Please note that every installation site can have its own
peculiarities. This document is intended to provide guidelines and recommendations, not rules.

6.1 General Recommendations

6.1.1 Number of Antennas
For high-speed ORT, SSI typically recommends two Avior antennas per 3.6m wide lane. The reason for
this recommendation is three-fold:

1. Increased spatial diversity

a. As the transponder transitions the read-zone multiple antennas will provide additional
opportunities to read the transponder from different angles. This will assist in reading
transponders installed in challenging positions.

2. Full edge-to-edge RF coverage

3. Antenna redundancy
a. In the event of a failure of one of the antennas, the additional antenna will provide
substantial coverage of the lane.

Installation Height 5.5 to 6.5m

Installation Angle 10 to 20 degrees (from horizontal)
Spacing Between Antennas 1.6m (center to center)

6.2 Side Elevation

Avior Antenna 10°-20°

5.5 to 6.5m Traffic Direction

6.4 Antenna RF Coverage
The following charts describe the RF coverage of the Avior antenna in each axis.

It is important to note that these charts do not describe the RF coverage for a specific vehicle. Rather,
they describe the RF coverage with no vehicles present in the lane. Each vehicle profile will impact the
read-zone differently.

SSI recommends that a full lane zone mapping is performed to verify coverage of the antennas before
the lane is put into operation.

6.4.1 X-Axis
This chart is an example of the RF coverage when two Avior antennas are installed at an angle of
approximately 10°. The X-axis refers to the width of the lane. In this chart, the vehicle is driving directly
into the page.

6.5 Antenna Cable

The type of antenna cable selected is important for a successful installation. The following table
describes the types of cables recommended for different installation lengths.

Cable Type Attenuation/100m Maximum Length

LMR-400 (or equivalent) 12.9 dB 15 m
LMR-600 (or equivalent) 8.3 dB 30 m
LMR-900 (or equivalent) 5.6 dB 42 m
