1. The document is a laboratory report for a chemistry course on the saponification of an ester. It details the objectives, introduction, procedure, results, questions, discussion, and conclusion of the experiment. 2. The experiment involved reacting ethyl bezoate with a sodium hydroxide solution to produce soap and glycerol through saponification. 3. Saponification has uses in medicine to describe hydrolysis of fats, and in the cooking oil process where fats are converted to soap using an aqueous base to produce sustainable and environmentally friendly products.

EXPERIMENT NO. 4

TITLE SAPONIFICATION OF AN ESTER

DATE & DAY 1 JANUARY 2022 ( SUNDAY)

OBJECTIVES
To study about the process of saponification
INTRODUCTION
Ester can be describes as the chemical compound that reacts with a hydroxl and an
oxoacid compound. In other words, it can also known as one hydroxyl group (-O-H)
that replace by an alkoxy group (-O-R) to be form of a carboxylic acid and alcohol.

PROCEDURE
1. 5 mL of ethyl bezoate was mixtured with a solution of 3 g of NaOH in 15 mL in
water by a round bottom flask.
2. The flask was fitted with a reflux condenser.
3. A few boiling chips was added in the flask to prevent from bumping.
4. The ester layer was disappeared after the mixture was boiled with gently in 15
minutes.
5. The flask will be cooled at room temperature. Then, the product was diluted with
50 mL of water.
6. The aqueous layer was separated form the oily layer by using a seperating funnel.
7. the dilute hudrochloride acid was added to the aqueous layer while stirring. Next,
the solution of acidic was tested by using litmus paper.
8. The precipitate was filtered by using Buchner funnel.
9. The observation was recorded.
10. The saponification of ethyl benzoate was written by a chemical equation.

RESULTS
The layer was formed The changes of litmus paper

The product of saponification

QUESTION
1. State two uses of saponification and explain.
Firstly, the saponification actually can be used into medicine. These process can be
understanding by denoting the hydrolytic action of an alkali with fat, kindly on
triacyglycerols.

Secondly, saponification are used in the process of cooking oil. Usually, fat
are functioning that can be converted into saop by react with an aqueous base. These
products are economcally sustainable and environmentaly friendly, these means that
there was no waste for products.

DISCUSSION
For discussion, saponification actually the process to make soap that were from fat
and alkali. Next, alkali as a function to breaks the ester bond and also to sure that fatty
acid salt and glycerol was released. Thus, soap was precipitated because from
saturared sodium hydroxide to get a salting out.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, to produce or making of saponification must be have the reaction from
soap and glycerol. In other facts, soaps are actullay water solube sodium salst of fatty
acids. Lastly, these products can be reacting strongly with strong alkali.
