G10 5e's - Chromosomal Mutation

The document is an integrated basic education lesson plan on chromosomal mutations dated March 14, 2023. The lesson plan aims to explain how mutations may cause changes in the structure and function of proteins. It includes objectives, content, procedures, and an evaluation. The procedures involve activities to illustrate different types of chromosomal mutations such as translocation, deletion, inversion, and duplication using modeling clay and chromosome strands.

INTEGRATED BASIC EDUCATION

LESSON PLAN
March 14, 2023

I. OBJECTIVES

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates an understanding of mutations that occur in sex
cells as being heritable.

Learning Competency:
a. Explain how mutations may cause changes in the structure and function of protein.

II. CONTENT
A. Topic:
Chromosomal Mutation

B. References:
Breaking Through Science 10 Second Edition pgs. 243-255.

C. Other Learning Resources

 Printed Materials
 Textbook
 Laptop
 Projector/TV

III. PROCEDURE
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Review

B. Developmental Activities
Motivation
Guess Me!

Ask students to identify what is the hidden word behind in each jumbled letters.

UMATNOIT HORSOSEMOMC ISHENSOT

COAIRNTOLTSNA ENNORIVSI EDTENOIL RTYMSOI
PUTIACNOIL OMYSONOM
C. ENGAGE
D
Activity 1
Chromosomal Disorders
Ask students to watch the different chromosomal disorders and its symptoms. After doing the
activity, ask the following questions.

1. What are the different chromosomal disorders in the video?

2. What do you think causes these abnormalities?

D. EXPLORE
Activity 2
Chromie Change

Objectives:
After performing this activity, you should be able to:
1. Illustrate the kinds of chromosomal mutation.
2. Differentiate the kinds of chromosomal mutations.

Materials Needed:
 Modeling clay

Procedure:
A. Translocation
1. Using modeling clay make models of two (2) chromosomes. One should have a different
color and size from the other.
2. Break one part of each of the chromosomes. Exchange the parts and attach them to each
of the other chromosomes. See illustration below.

B. Deletion
1. Make a model of a chromatid (one of the duplicated copies of a chromosome).
2. When done, remove a portion of it (close to either end of the chromosome or within the long arm
or short arm). If you choose to remove a part within the arms, be sure to join back the bottom part.
See sample illustration.

C. Inversion
1. Make a colored chromatid as shown below.
2. This time break a portion (with 2 colors) of it. Refer to the illustration below.

D. Duplication
1. Using modeling clay make models of two (2) chromosomes. One should have a different
color and size from the other.
2. Break one part of each of the chromosomes. Attach them the other chromosomes. See
illustration below.

Guide Questions:

1. What are the kinds of chromosomal mutation?

2. What are some possible effects of these chromosomal mutations?

E. EXPLAIN

The students will have a discussion and they will give their initial insights, comments and ideas
on how chromosomal mutations happen.

F. ELABORATE

Activity 3

Directions: Given the original chromosome strand below. Show the different types of structural
chromosomal mutations.

G. EVALUATE

Directions: Answer the following questions.

1. What type of mutation results in the substitution of only one nucleotide pair for another?
A. Inversion
B. Deletion
C. Translocation
D. Point mutation
2. Cri du chat syndrome is a genetic abnormality that results from the loss of a segment of which
chromosome?
A. 3
B. 5
C. 9
D. 21
3. Extra large upo and squash may result from which of the following chromosomal mutations?
A. Deletion
B. Duplication
C. Nondisjunction
D. Substitution
4. Which of the following chromosomal mutations results in myeloid leukemia?
A. Deletion
B. Duplication
C. Inversion
D. Translocation
5. It involves changes in sets of chromosomes, an entire chromosome, or parts of a chromosome.
