Criminological Research

This document discusses criminological research methods and statistics. It explores various research designs including case studies and policy research. The objectives are to discuss basic criminological research methods and apply statistical tools to analyze data. Various types of research are described, including quantitative and qualitative approaches. The scientific method is also outlined as a systematic process including recognizing the problem, forming a hypothesis, collecting and analyzing data, and determining conclusions.

Criminological Research and Statistics

This course explores the different ways in which criminological research is caried out. It includes the
different styles of criminological research (e.g. case study, policy-related, action- based), different types
of research designs, and the use of statistics.

Rationale

Analysis of crimes and criminal behavior needs following scientific methodology in

scientific basis gathering facts about crimes and criminal behavior and consequently analyzing them
assures objectivity and impartiality of those involved in solving crimes. This course therefore will orient
the criminology students on the basic principles and methods of conducting research which he or she
can apply in the practice of his or her profession in the future. Furthermore, the knowledge he or she
will gain from statistics will help him or her analyze research data scientifically.

Objectives: At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

1. Discuss and apply basic methods of research in their field; and

2. Apply statistical tools in the analysis and

interpretation of research data.

Research

It may be defined as a purposive, systematic and scientific process of gathering. analyzing, classifying,
organizing, presenting, and interpreting data for the solution of a problem, for prediction, for invention,
for the discovery of truth, or for the expansion or verification of existing knowledge, all for the
preservation and improvement of the quality of human life. (Calderon)

Characteristics of Good Research (AIMSMART)

1. Analytical

2. Investigative

3. Methods of statistics are employed.4. Systematic

5. Mission oriented

6. Accurate

7. Requires courage

8. Time bound

The Scientific Method of Research

One of the characteristics of good research is that, it is systematic. It follows the scientific method of
research which includes the following sequential steps: (Treece and Treece, Jr.,p47)

1. Determining (recognizing) the problem

2. Forming the hypothesis

3. Doing the library search

4. Designing the study

5. Developing the instrument for collecting data

6. Collecting of data

7. Analyzing of data

8. Determining the implication and conclusion fromthe findings, and

9. Making recommendation for further research
