Instructions
Respond the following scenarios by typing or neatly writing answers. Be sure to write your
name and class at the top of your answer sheet and number your responses correctly.

Write your answers in completed sentences.

Name your file your full name and class IT Coursework, for example John Brown_11J I.T.
_CW and upload the file to google classroom.

I prefer if you submit a typed document, but if pictures are being submitted, you should use
a software to combine the files, so you submit only one file with three pages or so.

If you choose to submit pictures, please ensure they are clear, properly aligned and
combined as a document. Not two or three separate pictures. Picture files can easily be
combined online at https://jpg2pdf.com/ or other sites.

Typed responses should be formatted as follows: Times New Roman or Calibri font, size 12
point and 1.5 line spacing.

Overview
A group of physicians have decided to start a medical centre to address the health care needs
of a developing middle-class community. Their advisors recommended that they integrate
computer networks and web technologies into their operations.
Using your knowledge computer networks and web technologies, respond to the following
questions.

Questions
1. The team has agreed to install a computer network, however, there is a disagreement
as to which network should be used. Some doctors want to use a LAN but one doctor
is suggesting that an intranet be installed instead.

a) Define the term computer network. 2 marks

b) Explain the relationship between an intranet and a LAN. 2 marks

c) Suggest with reasons, the type of network or networks that should be
used by the medical centre. 3 marks

2. In addition to a network, the medical centre will also use web technologies
including web pages, websites, and web servers. Their network setup will
allow patients access their medical records remotely.

a) Name the type of network that will allow patients to access the medical centre’s
private network. 1 mark

b) Outline how the web technologies named may be used to facilitate the
access describe above (remote access to medical records). 3 marks

c) Explain how the internet could be used in facilitating the operations of the
network named in part a. 2 marks

d) The medical centre will have fast and reliable internet access. Discuss the
advantages and disadvantages of cloud storage as opposed to local storage
to store patients’ files. 4 marks

3. The team of network engineers has indicated that the medical centre will need to
install routers connected by fibre optic cables as well as a hotspot in the patient’s
waiting room.

a) Explain the role of a router in the operation of a network. 2 marks

b) Suggest two advantages of using fibre optic cable as compared to other wired
transmission media. 2 marks

c) Explain what a hotspot is. 2 marks

d) State two computer network components necessary to set up a hotspot. 2 marks
