This conversion guide provides information on how to replace Bailey® Network 90® and
Infi 90® Distributed Control System I/O modules with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix®
hardware.

3. Intended User
This conversion guide is intended for engineers and technicians that have at least a basic
understanding of Bailey Network 90 and/or Infi 90 DCS hardware, Allen-Bradley
ControlLogix hardware, and general electrical/electronic circuitry.
4. Replacement Procedure
2. Create a table listing each I/O module, the Bailey TU used, and I/O voltages used
5. For each point used on each I/O module that will be replaced using an adapter
cable, check DIP shunt settings to see if they will need to be changed to use the
adapter cables and ControlLogix I/O modules. Create a document listing all
changes required.
6. Using the Bailey I/O Replacement Table, determine the required adapter cable(s)
and ControlLogix module(s).
13. Plug adapter cable into the appropriate ControlLogix module(s). Lable each RTB
on the adapter cable with the proper rack and slot number. Lable the Bailey TU
connector end of the adapter cable with the Bailey TU cabinet location and, if
necessary, TU connector number.
14. If the adapter cable has a separate wire that needs to be connected to the System
I/O power or common, make that connection.
15. Pull Bailey TU end of adapter cable through wireway to Bailey TU and plug into
TU.
16. Check, and if necessary, change Bailey TU DIP shunt and/or jumper settings to
the proper configuration for use with the adapter cable and ControlLogix
module(s).
17. Disconnect field wiring from Bailey TU’s that cannot be used with adapter cables
and rewire directly to the appropriate ControlLogix I/O modules as specified on
the external connection drawings.
19. The system I/O wiring is now completed. Power up system and perform loop
checks.
5. Assumptions
• All analog inputs to the actual Bailey input module is a voltage signal. For
current inputs, the current is converted to a voltage on the Bailey Termination
Unit. Thus, all adapter cables for analog inputs have the ControlLogix module
wired for voltage inputs. The ControlLogix AI modules need to be set for voltage
inputs (1 – 5 VDC) instead of current inputs (4 – 20 mA).
• All analog outputs are current outputs. The adapter cables for analog outputs
have the ControlLogix module wired for current outputs. If a voltage output is
required, then the output channel positive wire will need to be moved to the
appropriate terminal within the RTB for the corresponding module/channel.

A conversion chart spreadsheet is maintained showing the current list of Bailey I/O
modules/TU combinations that have an adapter cable to allow direct substitution with
Rockwell Automation ControlLogix I/O modules. Contact Rockwell for the latest
version of this conversion chart. The conversion chart shown below and on the next page
is the latest version as of the writing of this conversion guide.
Some Bailey I/O modules support a wide range of signal inputs but different
ControlLogix I/O modules are required to support that same range of signals. Thus, if
there is an application where one Bailey I/O module is interfacing to a mix of signals that
would require different ControlLogix I/O modules, that Bailey I/O module is not
supported by the simple “adapter cable and ControlLogix I/O module” replacement.
Instead, the field wiring for the I/O associated with the Bailey I/O module will need to be
removed from the corresponding Bailey Termination Unit and wired to the appropriate
ControlLogix I/O module terminations.
The simple “adapter cable and ControlLogix I/O module” replacement method described
in this document will not necessarily cover 100% of the I/O in an existing Bailey system.
It will address the majority of the I/O points. For those Bailey I/O modules and the
associated Termination Units, the existing field wiring will have to be disconnected from
the Termination Unit and rewired to ControlLogix I/O module terminations directly.
Because the I/O channel arrangement between some Bailey and ControlLogix I/O
modules do not match, there will be many instances where there are I/O points on
ControlLogix modules that are unused. A decision will have to be made whether to leave
these unused or attempt to manually wire to these points I/O from the field that is not
supported by the direct replacement method.
There are three basic sources for the adapter cables needed for an application:
To date, there is only one cable assembly shop, Microplex, that has been approved for
supplying all the Bailey TU to ControlLogix I/O Module Adapter Cables. Other cable
assembly shops may be added to the approved list in the future. Microplex built the
original prototype cables used for the development testing and has supplied cables for
actual conversion applications. The company contact information is:

The Bailey Analog Master Module functions are contained in the ControlLogix input
module. Thus, there is no one-to-one replacement of the Bailey Analog Master Module.
It is not needed when the Bailey I/O is replaced with ControlLogix.
The adapter cables mount the CJC temperature sensors for the 1756sc-IF8u module (two
sensors per module) inside the cover of the Bailey TU connector (P). If a more precise
measurement of the thermocouple junction temperature is desired, then the CJC sensors
will need to be moved from inside the TU connector to the desired mounting location.
Typically, this is a spot that is in isothermal contact with the thermocouple terminal
blocks.

The Bailey NTAO01 Termination Unit was set up so that the user never needed to
reconfigure the Dipshunt straps to set voltage or current mode, but only needed to rotate
the Dipshunt 180 degrees in the socket. The Dipshunt sockets are labeled V1 at one end
and I1 at the other end. It is a bit confusing as to what the Dipshunt orientation should
be. The standard Dipshunt for the NTAO01 has straps 1 through 5 cut and straps 6
through 8 intact. If the Dipshunt is inserted into the socket with the Dipshunt’s Pin 1 at
the end labeled I1, this set the TU up for current output mode. This is the configuration
that we always need when using the TU with ControlLogix, no matter whether a voltage
or current output is needed. The thing that has to change in the ControlLogix application
to determine whether the output is current or voltage is the RTB connection for the
positive output lead. The cable comes wired with the positive output lead on the IOUT
terminal which provides a current output. If a voltage output is needed, then the positive
output lead for the channel must be moved to the corresponding VOUT terminal on the
RTB.
There are no special ControlLogix coding requirements other than setting up the desired
output range.

The voltage levels for the digital inputs on the Bailey modules used with this TU were
jumper selectable on the Bailey module. When replacing the Bailey module with
ControlLogix, all the digital inputs must be of the same voltage range and then the
appropriate ControlLogix digital input module must be selected to handle the voltage
range.
The adapter cables for analog outputs have the ControlLogix module wired for current
outputs. If a voltage output is required, then the output channel positive wire will need to
be moved to the appropriate terminal within the RTB for the corresponding
module/channel.
The ControlLogix module used for the digital input replacement supports 16 digital
inputs. However, the Bailey TU and the adapter cable only provide connections for 3
digital inputs. Thus, digital inputs 4 – 16 on the ControlLogix module are unused.

Analog Outputs
To set whether the analog output is current or voltage, the RTB connection for the
positive output lead must be on the appropriate terminal. The cable comes wired with the
positive output lead on the IOUT terminal which provides a current output. If a voltage
output is needed, then the positive output lead for the channel must be moved to the
corresponding VOUT terminal on the RTB.
DIPSHUNT XU9

Analog inputs are always configured as voltage inputs even if the field device is
generating a 4-20mA current loop. The Bailey TU converts a current input signal into a
voltage signal using a 250 ohm resistor. Thus, a 4-20mA signal is converted into a 1-
5VDC input signal to the ControlLogix module. The ControlLogix module analog inputs
must be scaled accordingly.

ControlLogix modules. These modules must be physically adjacent to each other in the
ControlLogix rack and in the proper order to allow the cable to be attached properly. The
required module order from left to right is:

The Dipshunt for the corresponding analog output on the Bailey Termination Unit should
always be configured with just straps 4 and 5 connected, the rest disconnected.
There are no special ControlLogix coding requirements other than setting up the desired
output range.
Note that there are two unused analog outputs on the 1756-OF8 module connected to
RTB2 since the Bailey ASO module only had 14 total outputs. These two spare analog
outputs can be used but will need to have separate wiring brought into RTB2 from the
field device.

The voltage levels for the digital inputs on the Bailey modules used with this TU were
jumper selectable on the Bailey module. When replacing the Bailey module with
ControlLogix, all the digital inputs must be of the same voltage range and then the
appropriate ControlLogix digital input module must be selected to handle the voltage
range.

digital inputs. Thus, digital outputs 9 – 16 on the 1756-OB16I ControlLogix module and
digital inputs 9 – 16 on the 1756-IB16I ControlLogix module are unused.

Only digital outputs 1 – 8 on the 1756-OB16I and digital inputs 1 – 8 on the 1756-IB16I
ControlLogix modules are used. Digital outputs 9 – 16 and digital inputs 9 – 16 are not
connected through the adapter cable. Digital outputs 9 – 16 and digital inputs 9 - 16 may
be used, if desired, but will need to have separate wiring run to the corresponding RTB.

The following distinct cable designs have been identified to support the replacement of
the Bailey I/O modules listed in this document. These cables allow for the replacement
of the bulk of Bailey I/O module / TU combinations found in typical applications. There
are a few Bailey I/O module / TU combinations for which a direct TU to Replacement
With ControlLogix solution is not provided. These are generally specialized I/O modules
which are not commonly used.
