relationships. Communication is simply the act of transferring information
from one place, person or group to another. Every communication involves
(at least) one sender, a message and a recipient. These include our emotions,
the cultural situation, the medium used to communicate, and even our
location.

INTRODUCTION
In the world that we are facing today, schools need to help students to think
globally. Giving young people an understanding of how the world works can
be a really important skill as far as thriving in life (Sutcliffe, 2012). We all
want that the learners become globally competitive and so helping them to
communicate well are schools primary concern.

ACTIVITY 1: It Makes Sense

Going abroad though is not as simple as you think. Crucial that you
are prepared to interact with different cultures.
Let us see how well you know some distinct manners and practices of
different cultures. Write TRUE if the statement expresses truth about the
countries’ distinct practices; otherwise, write FALSE. Most of these items are
taken from “Multicultural manners: New rules of etiquette for a changing
society.” (Dresser,1996)

On Body Language
_______1. When greeting, people from India hold their hands together in front
of their chins in a prayer-like position.
_______2. When greeting, most Latinos expect body contact. Hugging and
kissing on the cheek are acceptable for both the same sex and the opposite
sex.
_______3. When greeting, most Middle Easteners, especially Muslims, avoid
body contact with the opposite sex, but men may embrace and kiss one
another.
_______4. When greeting, most Armenians, expect some body contact.
Women kiss once on each cheek and hug; men shake hands.
_______5. When greeting Orthodox Jews, avoid body contact with the
opposite sex.
On Verbal Expressions
________1. Avoid wishing “Happy Birthday” or “Merry Christmas” to
Jehovah’s Witnesses.
________2. After receiving praise, many Asians feel uncomfortable and
embarrassed. They may even consider praise as a form of subtle criticism.
________3. Some Asian cultures consider it rude to say no and will go to
extremes to avoid doing so.
________4. Open criticism should be avoided when dealing with Asian
employees, as this may lead to loss of face.
________5. Do not assume a married woman has her husband’s last name.

On Classroom Behavior
________1. To avoid emotional upset for Korean children and parents, do not
write students’ names in red-this has death connotations.
________2. If an Asian student bows to you, nod your head in response.
________3. Those from educational systems outside the United States often
consider informal, noisy classrooms as places of play, not learning.
________4. Students from outside the United States are often shocked by
some teachers’ behavior-sitting on desks, wearing casual clothing,
encouraging students to call them by their first names, engaging in
humorous banter.
________5. In Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean, teachers are
respected and revered and rarely challenged.
ACTIVITY 2: We’ll Figure It Out
In this activity, you will reflect on the innovations in international
education. TopUniversities.com in 2016 named unusual courses that we
never knew existed abroad. They are as follows:
10 Unusual Courses You Did not know Existed
1. Master’s degree in peace and conflict studies
2. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in eco-technology
3. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in game design
4. Master’s degree in communication for development
5. Master’s degree in open e-government
6. Master’s degree in outdoor environmental education and outdoor
learning
7. Master’s degree in automotive engineering
8. Master’s degree in spacecraft design
9. Master’s program in energy for smart cities
10.Master’s program in water resources engineering

Discuss these questions:

1. Do these courses appeal to you?
2. How does this vast array of career options benefit you?
3. What do these courses tell about our global society?
4. What do these courses tell about you?
5. What do these courses tell about the nature of subjects and
disciplines in this modern time?
6. What do these courses tell about global communication?
If you were to create new degrees today, what would they be? Fill out the
table below with the necessary information.
Degree Name Description Requirements

SELF-REFLECTION
Have you interacted with people who have a different culture from yours?
How was your interaction with them? Was it clear? Was it productive? Was it
respectful? What could you have done for a better interaction?

What is your attitude towards people who have a different culture from
yours? Do you celebrate how they are different from you? Do you look down
on them?
LESSON 3: Language Registers

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this lesson, the students can:

a. Identify features of formal and informal language registers;
b. Analyze texts in terms of language use and style;
c. Name situations when formal, informal and intimate registers are
applicable; and
d. Write reviews using the appropriate language register.

INTRODUCTION
Language register is the level of formality with which you communicate.
Different situations and people call for different registers. When writing
essays and letters, as candidate, need to think carefully about who the
target reader is for each task and try to write in an appropriate style and
tone.

ACTIVITY 1: What I Know

Let us check your knowledge on language registers. Read
carefully the statements in the first column and check the column of your
answer.
Statements Agree Disagree
1. Frozen register is printed language that does not
change and is found in published works, historical and
religious documents.
2. Formal register uses complete sentences standard for
work, business, and academe. It uses technical
vocabulary.
3. Informal register is a two-way participation of speech
standard for work, business, and academe. Examples
are speaking to a supervisor, colleague, and assistant in
a formal setting.
4. Intimate register is communication between loved
ones. Intonation is more important that wording or
grammar.
5. Casual register is language used in conversation with
friends. It is two-way communication characterized by
slang, ellipsis, and non-verbal modes. Interruptions are
very common.

Now, read the following sample texts for each register. Highlight
distinguishing expressions for each register.

Text A: FROZEN REGISTER

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by
him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was
life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and
the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:1-5 King James Version

Text B: FORMAL REGISTER

The Philippine K-12 Curriculum and accreditation agencies mandate schools
to shift from teacher-centered to learner-centered instructional practices
aimed at “making the curriculum relevant to the learners and “nurturing the
holistically developed Filipinos.”
In its fourth year of nationwide implementation, it is plausible to investigate
whether the curriculum developer’s expectations of learner-centered
pedagogies in the larger scale are implemented in the classrooms. Direct
studies provide crucial insights into the applicability of learner-centered
curriculum in the Philippine school setting.
This paper seeks to explore the perceptions and instructional practices of
Filipino teachers on learner-centered pedagogy. English and Filipino
language teachers were interviewed about their personal description and
definitions of learner-centered pedagogy. Their instructional practices were
also verified through close reading and analysis of the curriculum and
instructional plans. Themes like creative teaching strategies, innovative
practices, differentiated instruction and multimedia technology integration
emerged in the analysis. Teachers put premium on learning experiences that
provide students opportunities to use the target languages and foster greater
learner autonomy.

Text C: CONSULTATIVE REGISTER

A: Good morning Sir!
B: Good Morning! “I’m really excited to be working with you. This is great.
I’m really excited to get to know you, and to work even more closely with
you. Let me tell you a bit about kind of why I’m here. I’m here to help us
achieve X number of goals (whatever those things are), and to make sure
that we deliver extraordinary service, quality, etc. to our customers. I’m
really looking forward to your ideas on how we can achieve those two goals.
I’m also interested, while we’re talking, to hear what your goals are. Given
everything I’ve just said, let me ask you, what are your goals for this next
year?”

Text D: Casual Register

B: You’re the one I’ve always dreamed of. I’d do anything for you. Coz I love u
more.
A: Thank you my Love. You are the only man I ever want in my life 

ACTIVITY 2: I Can Do It
Before patronizing or purchasing any product, people
nowadays check on reviews and feedback. Now is your opportunity to use
appropriate language registers as you write a brief review of a book, play or
product. Choose one from the options below.
Differentiated Writing Review Tasks
Book Review of children – a literary magazine is releasing a series of
reviews of books that people enjoyed reading as a child and would
recommend to children today. You decide to send a review in which you
describe a book you enjoyed and the good features it had for you as a child.
You should also explain why it remains relevant for children today.

Play Review for teen audience – the longest running classic play has come
to the country to perform. You have seen it and would like to offer your
objective evaluation to teens in the Metro. Write a brief play review for it.

Food and Restaurant Review for adult friends – recent “mukbangs”

feature a newly-opened local restaurant. You enjoyed the sumptuous menu
and you would like to encourage your adult friends to visit the place and
enjoy the food. Write a review for this.
