Block Shear Example Table Solution
Block Shear Example Table Solution
punched for
⅞” bolts:
a. Check whether the plate has sufficient strength in block shear. The required LRFD strength Pu
= 225 kips and the required ASD strength Pa = 150 kips.
b. Verify your results by using AISC Tables 9.3a, 9.3b and 9.3c.
dbolt = 7/8”
dhole = 7/8” + 1/16” = 15/16”
Based on AISC B4-3.b, pg. 16.1-20,
width of a bolt hole is 1/16” greater than
the nominal diameter of the hole.
d = dhole + 1/16” = dbolt + 1/8” = 1.0”
Plate thickness = 0.5”
Fy = 36 ksi & Fu = 58 ksi
Tension Area:
Shear Area:
Agv = 2 sides (11” x 0.5”) = 11 in2
Anv = 2 sides (11” - 3.5 bolts x 1”) (0.5) = 7.5 in2
Rupture Capacity:
Use AISC Table 9-3b for Block Shear-Shear Yielding Component per inch of thickness, kip/in:
Fy = 36 ksi
Lev = 2”
n of bolts @ 3” spacing = 4 bolts
From AISC Table 9-3b, the design shear yielding component FyAgv/t = 178 kip/in
Multiply by 2 since we have two shear sides and by 0.5” since our plate thickness is 0.5”
Design shear yielding component, FyAgv = 2 x 178 kip/in x 0.5” = 178 kip
Reduction factor for block shear, = 0.75
Nominal Shear Yielding Component, FyAgv = 178 kip/= 178 kip/= 237.3 kip as before
Use AISC Table 9-3c for Block Shear-Shear Rupture Component per inch of thickness, kip/in:
Fu = 58 ksi
Lev = 2”
Bolt dia. d = 7/8”
n of bolts @ 3” spacing = 4 bolts
From AISC Table 9-3c, the design shear rupture component FuAnv/t = 196 kip/in
Multiply by 2 since we have two shear sides and by 0.5” since our plate thickness is 0.5”
Design shear rupture component, FuAnv = 2 x 196 kip/in x 0.5” = 196 kip
Reduction factor for block shear, = 0.75
Nominal Shear Rupture Component, FuAnv = 196 kip/= 196 kip/= 261.3 kip as before
