NASKAH UAS-THE
UJIAN AKHIR SEMESTER-TAKE HOME EXAM
UNIVERSITAS TERBUKA
SEMESTER: 2020/21.1

Reading I
BING4102
No. Soal Skor
1. At the age of 24, I left my native Turkey to study textiles at the Bolton Institute of 20
Technology in England. While studying, I worked as a waiter and then as the assistant
manager in a large restaurant to support myself. In the holidays, I travelled to Ontario in
Canada to work for a tobacco farmer as a tractor driver and then to New York to work as a
hotel doorman. I did this over two summer holiday periods and earned enough money to pay
for four years of college fees.
First and foremost because – with the help of loan – I had bought a new, mustard yellow
MGB GT sports car. I named her Henrietta. Thanks to my working holidays, I also had more
money than most of my fellow students. Also, I was so happy to bring her going out of town to
see my girlfriend who loved Henrietta a lot. Unfortunately, I spent most evenings in parties and
dining out at the expense of my studies.
I tried to juggle study, work and Henrietta but found that I simply could not do it all. I
failed my exams, changed courses and failed again. Bills started accumulating and eventually
Henrietta was repossessed by the finance company and I had to say goodbye to my beloved
sports car. Heartbroken and disappointed in myself. I concentrated on my studies passed my
exams and finally completed my course. But Henrietta was gone forever and, like a first love, I
missed her and thought about her every day.

2. Saluting Seal 20

Every so often, I take myself for a relaxing drive just to get out of my four walls. On this
particular morning I had driven to Eagle Bay, near Busselton in Western Australia. I was sitting
in the warmth and comfort of my car sipping a much-appreciated coffee on a cold, blustery
winter day and watching the ocean.
The rugged coastline was spectacular with white foamy waves crashing into the rocks.
Suddenly, the most majestic fur seal appeared from nowhere. I almost had to close and re-
open my eyes to realize what it was that I was witnessing.
Thereafter, the black, shiny, blubbery mammal playfully clambered up the rocks until he
reached the highest point right in front of me. There he stretched his nose high in the air,
saluting to the skies. It was as if he was bestowing gratitude to the universe for his wonderful
life of freedom. I thought to capture the image on my phone; still, I was transfixed and couldn‟t
take my eyes from him. I was utterly connected to him in those precious moments, where
nothing else mattered or even existed apart from the two of us. I could feel my whole self-
soften and felt warmed, uplifted and free all at once, because of him.

Elephants at Risk

The protected pachyderms of West Bengal, India – such as those in the Mahananda Wildlife
Sanctuary – are hardly out of harms‟ way. In fact, since 2004, twenty seven have been killed by
trains barreling down the hundred miles of track that run where they roam. Now the Ministry of
Railways is under pressure from conservationists and the environmental ministry to enforce
speed limits, reduce travel at night (when most casualties occur), and prune vegetation to
improve the driver‟s view.

4. This Smartphone Feature Could Save Your Life 30

An unresponsive patient arrives at the emergency room, and doctors don‟t know the
person‟s name or medical history or how to contact the next of kin. The person‟s phone – which
could provide at least some of that information – is password protected. Yet, there‟s a simple
solution, and it‟s woefully underused. It‟s called medical ID, and it‟s free smart phone feature
that allows first responders to access your emergency contacts and medical information
without having your passcode.
The first way of using Medical ID is you set it up and tap Emergency (or In Case of
Emergency) on your phone‟s locked home screen or passcode-prompt screen. Afterward, if
you use an IPhone, locate the built-in Health app – it‟s the one with the pink heart on a white
background. Tap medical ID and fill in your information. If you have no allergies and take no
medications, then enter “none known” or “none” so first responders will not wonder whether

you skipped the question. Next, tap Done.

If you use an Android, you should be aware of that some phones may come with their
own Medical ID feature. In this way, you can check your user manual. If yours does not,
download the Medical ID (free) app. Its icon has a bright red star on a white background. At this
point, open the app and you will see a profile for “John Doe”. Next, tap Edit and answer each
question. Lastly, tap the check mark.
