The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic group who have lived for generations in Myanmar, formerly known as
Burma, in a mostly Buddhist country. Despite growing and living in Myanmar for generations, the
Rohingya are still being denied as a citizen of Myanmar since 1982, making them the world's biggest
stateless population.
Being a stateless population, Rohingya are deprived of rights and security making them particularly
vulnerable to exploitation, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and abuse.
The Rohingya, a largely Muslim minority ethnic group in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, are fleeing
catastrophic violence that has followed decades of persecution and human rights violations, according
to the United Nations. UNHCR claimed that approximately 880,000 stateless Rohingya refugees now
reside in Kutupalong, the world's largest and most densely inhabited refugee camp. Children make up
around half of the refugees.
According to Save the Children in 1892, Rohingya is being denied as a citizen of Myanmar since then the
Rohingya ethnic groups have experienced violence and harassment.
On August 25, 2017, Myanmar security forces launched a systematic campaign of brutality against the
Rohingya community in northern Rakhine State following a series of attacks on Myanmar police and
border guard stations by a loosely organized Rohingya armed group.
With the said attack hundreds more people, including children, were slain in the next two weeks,
prompting the Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh. Over 700,000 individuals had left Myanmar to
Bangladesh in a short period of time, half of them were children.
Rohingya refugee is being compromised with political security. The political security of the Rohingya is
gone in the first place, since they were deprived of having their own citizenship in their own country.
Having a citizenship will put a person at ease since they are protected by the government of their
country, however; the Rohingya ethnic group are denied for having a citizenship and that what makes
them worried and live in fear. Several individuals are experiencing violence, sexual harassment, killings
and more. If they are a citizen of the Myanmar then they will have the freedom to do what they want,
to vote, speak and to have protection from the government. Since political security is the protection of
human rights and the well-being of all people is a political concern. It also contains safeguards against
official persecution, such as press freedom, speech freedom, and the right to vote. Yet, they are
stateless people of Myanmar and they do not a political security that will protect them from the
horrifying experiences.
Accoring to the BBC News that in January 2020, the International Criminal Court ordered Myanmar to
take immediate steps to safeguard Rohingya Muslims from being persecuted and killed. Individuals
suspected of war crimes or crimes against humanity can be brought before the International Criminal
Court (ICC). In November, the body gave its approval to a comprehensive inquiry into the Rohingya
people of Myanmar.
Many organization had helped the Rohingyan refugee in the Bangladesh, over 100 organization are
responding to the issues by helping the Rohingya to stay healthy, to have enough food and necessity and
to have a safegurad against the weather disaser and the Covid-19 pandemic (Concern Worldwide US,
2021).
