Aim of The Experiment:
To study the open loop & close loop response of DC-DC Boost
Converter
Apparatus Required:
SI. No. Name Specification Quantity
Buck Converter Trainer Kit VSMPS-066A

DC regulated Power Supply 0-30V, 2A

Digital Multimeter

DSO 5OMHz, 1GSa/s, 2Channel

Patch Cords & DSO Probes As per requirement

VSMPS-06A Trainer Kit:

Specification:
D C Input Voltage:(0-15V)DCat 1A
Constant Output Voltage : 30V DCc (Closed Loop) upto 1A (max)
PWM signal set voltage:0-3V
Switching Frequency:16.6 KHz
Maximum Load Current: 1A
Total Powerinput: 230V AC, 50 Hz

Major Components Details:

1. PWM Generator (TL494)
PWM signal is generated from the TL 494 IC. PWM generation is done by the comparison of thesaw
tooth waveform and the reference voltage signal. Saw tooth wave generator, a comparatorand other
auxiliary circuits are integrated on the chip.
2. Optoisolator (6N137 or 4506)
The function of Optoisolator is to isolate the control circuit from power circuit. PWM signalfrom
TL494IC is not directly fed to the power circuit In order to protect the PWM signal it isessential to
provide isolation circuit between power circuit and control cireuit.
3. Driver (IR2110)
A MOSFET drive circuit is designed to connect the gate directly to a voltage bus with nointervening
resistance other than the impedance the drive circuit switch. Gate driver acts as ahigh-power buffer
stage between the PWM output of the control device and gates of the primarypower switching MOSFET.
4. MOSFET switch (IRF250)
MOSET Switch is used as a switching device in the Boost converter circuit. The PWM signalfrom the
driver C is fed to the gate of the switch. The drain of the switch is connected to theprimary of the
isolation transformer.
5. Filter
This switched voltage signal undergocs rectification in the filter circuit. Finally rectified pure DCsignal is
Seen at the output terminal. The filter capacitor eliminates the unwanted ripple in the DC output.

Theory:
Boost Converter is a non-isolated DC-DC converter which steps up DC voltage at the output terminal
with same polarily. It is also called siep up chopper. It consists of a DC inpul source Vs, boost inductor L,
controlled switch S, fiter capacitorC and load resistor, Ri. Here we use MoSFET as switch and PWM
signal is used to control the switching. Boost converter is used in battery power system, PV cells, EVs

etc.
Boost converter operates in two modes i.c. when switch is ON & switch is OFF.
Mode I:Switchis ON, Diode is OFF

Q C ZRL Vo

When the switch is ON. current flows through the inductor and the short circuited path of the switch in
clockwise direction. The current in inductor increases linearly to maximum current and stores energy by
generating a magnetic field. The polarity of inductor is shown in fig. The total source voltage Vs applied
across the inductor making V=Vi. The diode get reverse biased and the capacitor will discharge through
the load.

ModeIl:Switchis OFE Diode isON:

Q c RL Vo

When the switch is OFF, the inductor will oppose change in current and generate voltage in opposite
polarity. The diode now gets forward biased and starts conducting. The energy stored in the inductor is
released and is ultimately dissipated in the load resistance to maintain the flow of current in the same
direction through the load. Now the inductor acts as a source in series with the source voltage resulting
higher voltage at output. Now the output voltage Vo= Vs+ Vi. which is higher than the source voltage.
By applying volt second balance method across inductor, we get:-

Vo Vs/1-DID= ton/T]
where, D- Duty cycle of PWM signal
Vo-Converter output voltage
Vs-Converter input Voltage
ton Switch On-time in sec
T- Device switching time in sec
