INTRODUCTION TO STAAD Pro

AIM:
To study the various features of STAAD Pro
REVIEW:
STAAD Pro is comprehensive structural engineering software that addresses
all aspects engineering including model development, verification, analysis,
design and review of results. Based on the data, the reports can be created.
The main option available in concurrent environmental are
STAAD Pro – Analysis and design
STAAD PRE – Graphical input generation
STAAD Post – Graphical post processing
STAAD INTDES – Interactive design of structural components
STAAD Pro
STAAD Pro performs the analysis and design of structure in the same run
STAAD Pro uses the command language based input format, which can be
created through editor, the powerful PRE graphics input generator.
STAAD PRE
STAAD PR facility allows generation of structural models graphically such as
generation and viewing of structural medals for both 2D and 3D structure.
STAAD Post
STAAD Post is a powerful graphics which facilities the verification of model
Including visualization of all item and also display of results.
STAAD INTDES
The option contains set of interactive design facilities for structural
components currently available option include design of cantilever retaining
walls, footing and slabs.

UTILITIES
Apart from various window facilities like temporary exit other program
running concurrently with STAAD. It also offers the following utilities within its
graphical interface.
Text editor: - for creating and editing the input file
View facilities: - for viewing the output file
Plot facilities: - for plotting and printing the output file and graphical screen
Data change with CAD programs: - for input of drawing data.
On screen calculator: - for interactive arithmetic calculation.
Staple: - it stands STAAD application programming language extension.
TYPE OF STRUCTURE
STAAD Pro is capable of analyzing and designing structures consisting of the
both frame and plate shell elements.
STRUCTURE GEOMETRY & CORDINATE SYSTEM
A structure is an assembly of individual components like beams, columns,
slabs, plates etc.in the STAAD Pro frame elements and plates elements may be
used to model the structural components. Typically modeling of the structure
geometry consists of 2 steps.
i. Identification and description of joints or nodes
ii. Modeling of members of element through specifications of
connectivity between joints.
STAAD Pro uses 2 type of co-ordinate system are associated with each member
and are utilized in MEMBER FORCE output on local load specification.
GEPMETRY
The Gepmetry option allows the user to create the structure geometry and
to modify it.
i. Add member / element : used to create new member and / or elements
In the model.
ii. Break all : allows the user to split intersecting members in the model.

3
4
Prismatic property of the following commands is used to specify the section
shape and additional properties.
Built in section library : this feature of the program allows the user to specify
the section name of structural steel of standard shapes, manufacture in
different countries.
User provided steel sections : The user can provided a customized steel table
with designated steel names can find the member properties.
Tapered section : Properties of tapered I section may be provided through
member properties specification.
Constants : The material constants are modules of elastic, weight ,density,
beta angle, global axes. Supports are specified as pinned, fixed or fixed butt
with different releases.
MEMBER SPECIFICATION
The member specification option allows specification of the structural
condition of individual members and elements in structure. The specification
are:
Member offset: Some members of a structure are at an offset distance from
the incident joint. Any reference from the start or end of that member will
always be from the new offset point.
Member release : one or both of a member or element can be released by
removing the individual degrees of freedom from analysis.
Truss /tension member : when all members in the structure are truss member,
the structure type is declared as truss whereas only some of the member are
truss member.
LOADS
STAAD Pro can generate the self-weight of the structure and use it as a
uniformly distributed member loads in analysis loads in structure can be
specified as
Member load : these are uniformly distributed loads and linearly verifying
loads & may be applied directly to a member of a structure.
Joint load : Joint loads both faces &moments, may be applied to any free joint
of a structural member frame

5
6
Load combination specification : Tis command may be used to combine the
result of the analysis.
ANALYSIS
Following analysis facilities is available in STAAD Pro
1. Stiffness analysis
2. Second order analysis
3. Dynamic analysis
STIFFNES ANALYSIS
The stiffness implemented by STAAD Pro is based on the matrix displacement
method. In the matrix analysis of structures by the displacement method, the
structure is first idealized into a small assembly of discrete structural
components. The complete stiffness matrix of the structure is obtained by
symmetrically summing up the contribution co various member and the
element stiffness. The external leads on the structure are represented as
discrete concentrated loads acting only on modal points of the structure. The
total number of degree of freedom represents the number of unknown in the
analysis. The solution of equation done with modified colicky decomposition
technique.
RESULT
The features of STAAD Pro were studied.
