Q1. (a) Figure Q1(a) shows an amplifier with negative feedback. Explain how does
the inclusion of the negative feedback makes the overall gain to be less
sensitive to the variations in the open-loop gain, A. (3 marks)

Figure Q1(a)

(b) Figure Q1(b) shows a negative feedback system. The amplifiers’ open loop
gains are given as follow:

25 18 20
𝐴1 (𝑓) = , 𝐴2 (𝑓) = , 𝐴3 (𝑓) =
𝑓 𝑓 𝑓
1+𝑗 1+𝑗 1+𝑗
5000 5000 5000

Figure Q1(b)

Determine the
(i) gain-bandwidth product, GBW of the system. (3 marks)

(ii) value of the feedback transfer function, β so that the system can be
stable. (5 marks)

(iii) phase margin if the low-frequency closed-loop gain, Af(0) = 1500.

Q1. (Continued)

(c) Figure Q1(c) shows a 4-bit digital-to-analogue converter of type R-2R ladder.
Given the converter has a digital input of 1011, reference voltage of 5 V and an
analogue output of -4.58 V. Find the possible values of R and RF. (4 marks)

Figure Q1(c)

[Total: 20 marks]

Q2. (a) Table Q2 shows the datasheet comprising the parameters of a practical
op-amp. Please answer the following questions with reference to the data in
Table Q2.

Q2. (Continued)

(i) Determine the full-power bandwidth for a 12-V output. (3 marks)

(ii) Determine the magnitude of the common-mode gain, Acm. Use the
minimum values from Table Q2. (4 marks)

(iii) Determine the open-loop bandwidth, fH. Use the typical values from
Table Q2. (3 marks)

(b) The op-amp is now connected as a non- inverting amplifier as shown in Figure
Q2(b). Given that R1 = 15 kΩ and R2 = 45 kΩ. Use the typical values from
Table Q2.

Figure Q2(b)

(i) Analyse the circuit in Figure Q2(b) to find the value of the closed-loop
gain of the amplifier due to the effect of the finite open-loop gain of the
practical op-amp. State at least TWO assumptions made in your
analysis. Show all important steps. (6 marks)

(ii) Analyse the circuit in Figure Q2(b) to find the best method to
compensate for the input offset voltage, VOS without affecting the gain
of the amplifier. (4 marks)
