Method Statement Honey Comb Repair

This method statement summarizes the process for repairing shallow honeycombs (less than 50mm deep) in concrete where the reinforcing bar is not exposed. It involves preparing the surface by cleaning and roughening the honeycomb, applying a bonding agent, and then filling the honeycomb with a non-shrink grout. Proper personal protective equipment and COVID safety measures will be followed to protect worker health and safety.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR
CONCRETE REPARE FOR
HONEYCOMBS

Project Manager:

Uditha Wijesena
1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Method Statement is to create awareness of common tasks involved in repairing of
honeycombs and ensure the execution is in full compliance with Specifications & Standards, and other
related Construction compliance to Standards & Specifications including HSE requirements. This Method
Statement shall be communicated and be understood by all personnel associated with the task before
commencing the activity.
2. SCOPE OF WORKS
In general, contractor shall receive client’s approval for manufacturer of material, and equipment prior
to starting the repair. Approved materials shall be verified upon received at site. honeycombs repairing
procedure shall be in accordance with this Method Statement.
There are two types of honeycomb repairs

1. Shallow honeycombs (d < 50 mm, rebar not exposed)

2. Deep honeycombs (d ≥ 50 mm, rebar exposed)

The case to be considered here is Shallow honeycomb where re-bar is not exposed.

5. PROCEDURE
5.1. General
Surface Preparation
Visible separation shall be identified and marked. The defect shall be grooved “V” shape by routing
to a minimum depth of 10 mm and if found loose concrete, continued up to sound concrete. Prepared
surfaces must be clean, sound, and free from dust and shutter release oils after chipping. Concrete
surfaces must be thoroughly pre-wetted but excess surface water (free water) must be removed prior
to placing the grout. Always ensure that the shutters are watertight and sealed to prevent suction of
water from the product.

However, in this case the repair will be minimal to the loose surface as the chipped area will be
received with the new concrete pour on the grease trap base slab sealing the total honeycombed
area structurally.

Identify the type of honeycomb

After the preparation of surface, if the depth of concrete hole below 50mm. (Figure: 01)

It was a shallow honeycomb. For this type grouting

 Bara Emulsion - Bonding agent

 StoCrete NSG Eco F non shrink grout

These two materials will be used. Mixed grout can directly apply to the cleaned surface using a spatula or
mason trowel.

Note Material Data sheet for StoCrete NSG Eco F General purpose flowable non-shrink grout has already
been submitted for approval to be used in the sealing of P cone cavities.
6. HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

All workers will be inducted on the importance of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during
work following the safety procedures. All staff and labour will be required to adhere to the social
distancing and wear face masks as stipulated in the Health Guideline issued to construction sites.
