MS OF Raft & Water Proofing

This document outlines the method statement for constructing a raft foundation and waterproofing the raft. It describes the key steps as: 1) establishing the site, surveying, and excavating for the raft; 2) laying a leveling course of PCC at the bottom of the excavation; 3) installing horizontal waterproofing by applying a cement mortar with waterproofing compound, laying rough stone slabs, and additional cement mortar layer; 4) fabricating and installing reinforcement steel cages; 5) erecting shuttering; and 6) pouring and vibrating concrete in layers to form the raft foundation.

Method Statement of Raft & Water proofing of Raft

1.1. Design & Drawings

The work will be carried out as per the approved design and drawing. The
design and drawing with design calculation will be submitted separately.
Controlled copies of relevant drawings shall be made available at site and
shall remain available with site engineer throughout the work.

1.2. Site Establishment

The area covered by the raft shall be examined for the presence of any utilities.
Identified utilities shall be mapped and those which are likely to cause hindrances to
the foundations shall be brought to the attention of the utility provider and Engineer.

On approval from the Engineer the identified utility shall be relocated or

diverted/shifted through authorized sub-contractor of the utility providers before
starting the excavation work.

1.3. Survey

Before commencing excavation, the area shall be marked on the ground after
carrying out survey with reference to control points. After excavation the
levels of the pit shall be checked. After laying of PCC the layout of the raft
shall be marked on it with reference to the reference points to facilitate tying
of rebar and erection of shuttering.

1.4. Excavation & Shoring

Deep excavation to be propped suitably to maintain safety for workers. Proper

side slope or shoring shall be provided where ever necessary depending upon
the stability of the soil. At road locations the pit shall be excavated to the
dimensions providing working space all around the raft, to facilitate fixing of
reinforcement steel & erection of shuttering as detailed in the drawings. The
last 200mm excavation shall be carried out manually & leveling course shall
be laid down. Provision for sump if necessary, shall be made at the corner of
the pit to pump out underground water of about 750mm deep from PCC
bottom. Also a drain shall be provided all around tank dimension & it shall be
connected with sump to drain off excess rain water/seepage water. The
excavated earth shall then be disposed off in trucks to dumping yards
provided by local authorities.

1.5. PCC
After leveling the bottom, the pit shall be watered to keep the soil moist. PCC
of grade (as per GFC Drawing) shall be mixed at the centralized batching
plant and transported to site in transit mixers or direct by pump. The
concrete shall be directly poured by chute or pump and leveled manually to
the minimum specified thickness shown in the drawing. The PCC shall be
cured by sprinkling water.

1.6. Horizontal Water Proofing

1. Surface Preparation
The Surface of Leveling course should be roughened properly when the
PCC/Lean Concrete is still green and washed with water .(However, in
case the Surface is not made rough before the concrete is set, the work
of water proofing should not be executed till proper key is provided for
the base).

2. Water proofing compound mixed with water

Water proofing compound conforming to IS 2645 should be mixed
properly with the cement. The Quantity of water Proofing compound to
be mixed should be prescribed in the specifications. For the water
Proofing compound in liquid form the blending is to be done with water.
The Mix should be thoroughly stirred so that the water is completely
blended with water proofing compound.

3. Preparation and Application of Cement Mortar (Base Course)

Cement Mortar Shall be prepared by using cement and blended water in
the ratio 1:3 as described in the specifications .A 25mm thick layer of this
cement mortar shall be placed thoroughly on the surface. After
application of base course, curing shall be done regularly.

4. Laying of Rough Kota Stone

The Stone Slabs to be used for water Proofing shall be of thickness 20mm
to 22mm .The approximate size of stone slabs to be used shall be
550mmx550mm or 550mmx850mm.Larger Size of Stone Slabs shall be
used to minimize the number of joints. The Slabs should be laid properly
with approximate gap between the joints to be 6mm.After Laying the
joints shall be raked and sealed with cement mixed with water proofing
compound (in the ration 1:1).

5. Laying of Water Proofing Course

A 25mm thick layer of cement mortar 1:4 (one part cement: four parts
coarse sand) mixed with water proofing compound shall be laid and
finished smooth.

6. Curing

Immediately after Completing the work, arrangements shall be made for

the top RCC Slab as quickly as possible in the meantime till the top slab
is casted the water proofing treatment shall be kept wet continuously. In
case the concreting of raft gets delayed for more than 2 weeks the curing
can be stopped after 7 days.

1.7. Reinforcement Steel

1.7.1. Fabrication of Reinforcement Steel
For fabrication of reinforcement, BBS shall be prepared as per the
good for construction drawings and got approved from Engineer in
charge representative. The Reinforcement shall be cut using cutting
machines or manually as required and bent at Rebar yard. The bars
touching up may be done using wire brush if required to ensure that
the bars are free from dust & rust. The rebar shall be transported to
location in trailer / truck to the location or manually depending upon
the lead.
1.7.2. Fixing of Reinforcement Steel
The rebar shall be manually fixed into its position as shown in the good
for construction drawing. Cover blocks of same grade of concrete in
which it is going to be embedded shall be provided at suitable spacing
to ensure uniform cover of as specified in drawing and tied together
with binding wire. After fixing the raft rebar, Retaining wall rebar
including column shall be fixed. Retaining wall and column rebar shall
be supported properly. The rebar cage shall be checked by Engineer in
charge representative and all the rebar, chairs, spacers & laps shall be
jointly measured after completion of cage placing. Chairs and spacers
shall be provided as approved by Engineer in Charge. After getting the
clearance shuttering work will be taken up.
1.8. Shuttering

Shuttering shall be fabricated for raft. Shuttering shall be properly fixed with
sufficient supports and shall be properly marked before placing. Before
placing the shuttering, shuttering oil shall be applied on shutter face in
contact with the concrete, to ensure easy removal of shuttering & proper
concrete finish. After fixing of shuttering it shall be checked from Engineer in
Charge representative for its alignment, location & correctness along with
rebar and approved. For preventing leakages from joints, rubber strip/foam
strip shall be provided at the joints of shuttering plates.

1.9. Concreting
The concrete required shall be produced as per the approved design mix at
the centralized batching plant and transported by transit mixers or direct by
pump to the pouring location. Before pouring concrete slump of 120+/-
20mm shall be checked at pouring location. Concrete placing will commence
from one end to another in manner cascading till completion. Concrete will
be poured by the use of chute ensuring that height of fall of Concrete is not
more than 1.5 M. The concrete shall be vibrated using 60mm / 40mm
diameter needle vibrators. It shall be ensured that the needle shall reach
the bottom of Raft. Concrete cubes shall be taken for testing of
compressive strength as per IS: 456-2000 at pouring location. Concreting
shall be done in layer as continuous manner to avoid cold joints. The
maximum thickness of concrete layer shall be 500mm.
