Statement of Purpose

"A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work" -
Colin Powell
The stated quote resonates well with my belief and acts as my motto in all my pursuits. I have always
shared an intense passion for computer science and its rapid development in this modern world. My
search for knowledge in this particular field has been deepened by constant curiosity how a simple
algorithm makes wonders. I can still recollect the memories of the cozy afternoons; I spent playing
computer games with the staunch devotee. I believe those moments do have a persuasive role to play in
implanting a deep-seated love for computer science, which enabled me to enroll in a computer science
course at VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology. Being a student in this discipline
has been exciting experience which motivated me to explore deeper in this field.
My interest in developing algorithms and programs led me to take the courses, such as "Programming
through C++" and "Data structures” in my freshman year of college. Along with intense course work, I
completed a project titled as "Hospital management". I developed a program to automate the hospital
appointment process. The successful completion of this project boosted my confidence to employ the text
book knowledge into practice.
As a freshman, I joined in the “Computer Society of India” an international student chapter in my college,
which organizes various workshops on emerging technologies and encourages the students to present
their ideas and projects. My role as volunteer for organizing different events and workshops provided an
opportunity to interact with qualified and inspiring mentors, whose role has been significant in my growth
and progress.
Subsequently, I was involved in establishing a student club "Tuning Hut", with a team of mentors and
fellow pupils. The main focus of this club is to provide the necessary support and guidance for those who
are passionate learn to programming. The participation in this club helped me to gain more insights on
technical skills such as python and Django, including problem-solving techniques, and various
optimization approaches, which altogether helped me in various coding Hackathon events. Finally, I was
able to put all my skills into action and came up with my second project titled "System Health" using
python for Linux systems. The program continuously monitors the system resources, such as memory
usage of RAM, CPU utilization, and the number of interrupts that a system is receiving and presents them
graphically to the user.
In my fourth semester, I was taught DBMS and data mining, which planted a seed of eagerness on how
such large amount of data could be managed and transformed and can be used to predict the future trends.
This curiosity has made me to choose "Advanced databases" and "predictive analytics" courses in my
sixth semester, with this I was able to get an idea about how distributed databases work and also the
working various machine learning algorithms. Later, I enrolled myself into a certification course, offered
at my college on "Big data", where I was introduced to various big data frameworks such as Hadoop,
Spark and NoSQL databases including MongodB.
During my summer break after my second year I enrolled myself into a Machine Learning Course,
offered by NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), which is initiated by IITs
(Indian Institute of Technology)and "Linear Algebra" course offered by MIT open course ware. I scored
72% in the final exam and conducted by NPTEL and stood one among those 804 students who qualified
among total 5000 enrollments, Through these courses, I was able to gain deeper understanding on how an
algorithm works and its potential applications in different fields, and helped me explore the subfields such
as Computer –Vision.
My first project on machine learning, is a simple deep neural network for character recognition, gave me
good kick start into this field, which later I developed a Model for summarizing the user reviews to
ratings on a scale of 5 using LSTM neural nets with Glove word embeddings.
I believe, our final year academic project “Assistencia-An AI Attendance Marking System" is the best
among those I completed till the date.It is a prototype for effective class management, which aimed to
automate the process of taking attendance in the class room through face detection and face recognition
using Convolution neural networks We also further built a website and database schema to store the data
of the students and professors using Django, a python framework for web design and SQl server. We
implemented this prototype in one of the classrooms at our college and it produced remarkable results
with an accuracy of 92%. This project was greatly applauded for its social impact and awarded with “the
best project in our computer science department” for academic year 2019.Later we published our work
in an International Journal JEITER (Journal of Emerging Technologies and Innovation Research).
After my graduation, I was recruited by Tata Consultancy Services as a software developer for the British
Telecom (BT) team, where I worked on a project, involves in developing an application which allows
users to directly choose their services and plans. They can even also order the other products without
involvement of third-party agents, which earlier users had to contact a third-party agent to perform this
process. I have been working for BT (British Telecom) for the last 9 months and during my time with
them, I was exposed to various new frameworks, such as Spring, Jenkins, C#, GO server. During this
phase, I proposed an improvement for the scope of the product, to track of the customer's feedback and
complaints on a particular service or product to improve the service and to achieve customer satisfaction.
Apart from my course work, I have been elected as a core member for the organizing committee for my
college technical event "OPEN HOUSE", where students from different colleges come together to present
their ideas and projects and to attend various workshops and talks by prominent entrepreneurs. This
experience undoubtedly helped me to develop managerial skills and also helped me to make good
connections with like-minded people.
I believe that graduate studies would provide me with the opportunities to attend advanced courses and
helps to gain more insights in the field of computer Science and would be the stepping-stone to my career.
Arizona State University suits my interests because of its advanced academic curriculum offering a wide
range of courses such as "CSE 572 Data Mining" and "CSE 576 Topics in Natural Language
Processing" and much more to choose, along with the world-class research Labs specifically "Data
Mining and Machine Learning Lab (DMML)” and “DATA SYSTEMS LAB”. The current research
increased my curiosity and motivated me towards your renowned Computer Science Program. I believe
that, it is the best environment for me to achieve my goals while gaining experience and exposure to a
diverse student body and faculty. Therefore, I look forward to a flourishing and fruitful association with
the Arizona State University.
