Magne-Artistic!: Learning Activity Sheet

This document contains a learning activity sheet for a Grade 12 General Physics class. The activity involves analyzing and drawing diagrams to illustrate magnetic field concepts including the magnetic field around a current-carrying wire, the force on a current-carrying wire in a magnetic field, and the magnetic fields created by solenoids and loops of wire. Students are asked to draw diagrams, calculate magnetic field magnitudes, and determine the direction of forces. The activity is designed to help students evaluate magnetic fields and forces from current-carrying conductors.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

GRADE 12 – GENERAL PHYSICS 2

Name: Date: Rating/Score:

MAGNE-ARTISTIC!

Direction: Analyze each item

carefully. Draw what is required for
each item and explain your answers,
as necessary. Take note of the
directions and the corresponding
symbols for each.

1. Draw the magnetic field lines for a current-carrying wire viewed from one of its
ends. Specify the direction of the magnetic field lines associated at the given
points 𝑝 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑞

2. A wire is attached loosely to two blocks as shown in the diagram below. Draw
magnetic field lines directed into the page of this paper and label the lines collectively as
⃑⃑ . Draw what will happen to the loose wire when current passes through it in the
𝑩
direction indicated in the figure. (Clue: Even if the wire is attached loosely, it can still be
pulled if a net force is applied to it. )

Specific Week: 6 (LAS 4)

Target Competency: Evaluate the magnetic force on an arbitrary wire segment placed in a uniform magnetic field
(STEM_GP12EMIIIh-59); Evaluate the magnetic field vector at a given point in space due to a moving point charge, an
infinitesimal current element, or a straight current-carrying conductor. (STEM_GP12EMIIIh- 60)

3. A positively charged particle is travelling west and it encounters an external magnetic

field of unknown direction. The positively charged particle is then deflected to the South
due to the magnetic force exerted by the external field. Draw the situation to determine the
direction of the external magnetic field.

4. Two current-carrying loops are arranged so that one of the loops just sits above
the other just like in the figure below. The current in each loop is directed
counterclockwise. Draw the resulting magnetic field for each loop to determine
how the loops will “interact” with each other.

5. A section of a current-carrying rectangular loop is placed inside a current

carrying solenoid as shown in the figure below. Draw the magnetic field produced
by the solenoid to determine what will be its effect on the section of the rectangular
loop inserted inside.

Specific Week: 6 (LAS 4)

Target Competency: Describe the motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field in terms of its speed, acceleration,
cyclotron radius, cyclotron frequency, and kinetic energy (STEM_GP12EMIIIh- 58); Calculate the magnetic field due to one
or more straight wire conductors using the superposition principle (STEM_GP12EMIIIi-62); Evaluate the magnetic field
vector at any point along the axis of a circular current loop (STEM_GP12EMIIIi-64)

1. A 0.5-meter solenoid has 16 loops and carries 2.0 A current in the direction
shown in the figure below. If the observer can see the magnetic field lines from
the position indicated in the figure:
a. Draw the appearance of the magnetic field lines as seen by the observer at that
position.
b. Calculate for the magnitude of the magnetic field produced by the current-
carrying loop.

2. A negatively charged particle (𝑞 = 1.602 𝑥10−19𝐶) is moving westward with a

velocity of 2.0 𝑥 10−5 𝑚/𝑠 . It encounters a 0.50 𝑇 magnetic field region directed
60.0𝑂 (along the same plane) with respect to the direction of the velocity. (a) Draw
the situation with label and (b) solve for the magnitude of the magnetic force on
the electron. (Take note that the magnetic force is always perpendicular to the
plane of the velocity and the magnetic field.)

Specific Week: 6 (LAS 4)

Target Competency: Evaluate the magnetic field vector at any point along the axis of a circular current loop
(STEM_GP12EMIIIi-64); Solve problems involving magnetic fields, forces due to magnetic fields and the motion of charges
and current-carrying wires in contexts such as, but not limited to, determining the strength of Earth’s magnetic field, mass
spectrometers, and solenoids. (STEM_GP12EMIIIi- 66)

3. A long, straight conductor carries a current of 8.0 A and is directed to the right.
What is the magnitude of the magnetic field produced by the current-carrying
wire 2.0 m from the wire? (See figure below) Draw the magnetic field to
determine the direction of the field at the specified point P.

4. Two current-carrying loops are arranged so that they form concentric circles as shown
in the figure below. The bigger loop (radius = 0.80 m) has a 5.00 A-current passing
through it. The smaller loop has a radius of 0.40 m. Draw the magnetic field (use 2
different colors) produced by each current carrying loop. Determine the magnitude of the
current in the inner loop so that the resulting net magnetic field at the center of the
concentric loops will be zero. (Hint: This will only happen when the directions of the
magnetic field produced by each loop are opposite in direction)
