MAGNE-ARTISTIC!
1. Draw the magnetic field lines for a current-carrying wire viewed from one of its
ends. Specify the direction of the magnetic field lines associated at the given
points 𝑝 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑞
2. A wire is attached loosely to two blocks as shown in the diagram below. Draw
magnetic field lines directed into the page of this paper and label the lines collectively as
⃑⃑ . Draw what will happen to the loose wire when current passes through it in the
𝑩
direction indicated in the figure. (Clue: Even if the wire is attached loosely, it can still be
pulled if a net force is applied to it. )
4. Two current-carrying loops are arranged so that one of the loops just sits above
the other just like in the figure below. The current in each loop is directed
counterclockwise. Draw the resulting magnetic field for each loop to determine
how the loops will “interact” with each other.
MAGNE-ARTISTIC, MAGNE-MATIC!
1. A 0.5-meter solenoid has 16 loops and carries 2.0 A current in the direction
shown in the figure below. If the observer can see the magnetic field lines from
the position indicated in the figure:
a. Draw the appearance of the magnetic field lines as seen by the observer at that
position.
b. Calculate for the magnitude of the magnetic field produced by the current-
carrying loop.
3. A long, straight conductor carries a current of 8.0 A and is directed to the right.
What is the magnitude of the magnetic field produced by the current-carrying
wire 2.0 m from the wire? (See figure below) Draw the magnetic field to
determine the direction of the field at the specified point P.
4. Two current-carrying loops are arranged so that they form concentric circles as shown
in the figure below. The bigger loop (radius = 0.80 m) has a 5.00 A-current passing
through it. The smaller loop has a radius of 0.40 m. Draw the magnetic field (use 2
different colors) produced by each current carrying loop. Determine the magnitude of the
current in the inner loop so that the resulting net magnetic field at the center of the
concentric loops will be zero. (Hint: This will only happen when the directions of the
magnetic field produced by each loop are opposite in direction)
