MODULE 4
Weeks 4-5
(The Curriculum Framework for the Philippine Basic Education AND Enhanced
Basic Education Act of 2013)
Activities:
1.1. New vision, mission, goals and objectives of the Department of Education
We dream of Filipinos
who passionately love their country
and whose values and competencies
enable them to realize their full potential
and contribute meaningfully to building the nation.
To protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality, equitable, culture-based,
and complete basic education where:
Students learn in a child-friendly, gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating environment.
Teachers facilitate learning and constantly nurture every learner.
Administrators and staff, as stewards of the institution, ensure an enabling and
supportive environment for effective learning to happen.
Family, community, and other stakeholders are actively engaged and share
responsibility for developing life-long learners.
Department of Teacher Education Goals and Objectives
1. Students will demonstrate content knowledge of the curriculum, based in theory and
commensurate with the PA Standards/Common Core.
2. Students will communicate effectively in a variety of formats.
A) Students will use appropriate and effective verbal and nonverbal communication.
B) Students will demonstrate proficiency in written communication in the areas of focus,
content, organization, style, and conventions.
3. Students will maintain professional conduct and ethical behavior.
4. Students will manage a learning environment that is safe and conducive to learning.
5. Students will link content to related research-based pedagogy based on sound
educational
psychology principles in short- and long-range instructional plans.
Every Filipino child now has access to early childhood education through Universal
Kindergarten. At 5 years old, children start schooling and are given the means to slowly
adjust to formal education.
Research shows that children who underwent Kindergarten have better completion
rates than those who did not. Children who complete a standards-based Kindergarten
program are better prepared, for primary education.
Education for children in the early years lays the foundation for lifelong learning and for
the total development of a child. The early years of a human being, from 0 to 6 years,
are the most critical period when the brain grows to at least 60-70 percent of adult size
In Kindergarten, students learn the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and colors through
games, songs, and dances, in their Mother Tongue
Examples, activities, songs, poems, stories, and illustrations are based on local culture,
history, and reality. This makes the lessons relevant to the learners and easy to
understand.
Students acquire in-depth knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes through continuity
and consistency across all levels and subjects.
Discussions on issues such as Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Climate Change
Adaptation, and Information & Communication Technology (ICT) are included in the
enhanced curriculum.
Students are able to learn best through their first language, their Mother Tongue (MT).
Twelve (12) MT languages have been introduced for SY 2012-2013: Bahasa Sug, Bikol,
Cebuano, Chabacano, Hiligaynon, Iloko, Kapampangan, Maguindanaoan, Meranao,
Pangasinense, Tagalog, and Waray. Other local languages will be added in succeeding
school years.
Aside from the Mother Tongue, English and Filipino are taught as subjects starting
Grade 1, with a focus on oral fluency. From Grades 4 to 6, English and Filipino are
gradually introduced as languages of instruction. Both will become primary languages of
instruction in Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS).
After Grade 1, every student can read in his or her Mother Tongue. Learning in Mother
Tongue also serves as the foundation for students to learn Filipino and English easily.
Subjects are taught from the simplest concepts to more complicated concepts through
grade levels in spiral progression. As early as elementary, students gain knowledge in
areas such as Biology, Geometry, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Algebra. This ensures
a mastery of knowledge and skills after each level.
For example, currently in High School, Biology is taught in 2nd Year, Chemistry in 3rd
Year, and Physics in 4th Year. In K to 12, these subjects are connected and integrated
from Grades 7 to 10. This same method is used in other Learning Areas like Math.
GEARING UP FOR THE FUTURE (SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL)
Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary education; students
may choose a specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. The
choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a student will take in
Grades 11 and 12. SHS subjects fall under either the Core Curriculum or specific
Tracks.
PHILOSOPHY OF K12 CURRICULUM EDUCATION
The Learning Areas The learning areas of the K to 12 curriculum intersect the
grade levels from Grade 1 to Grade 12.

2) Study closely the K to 12 curriculum. List down your observation regarding the
important features of the curriculum that will show graduates readiness either to
proceed to further schooling or enter the world of work.
3)Suppose you are a principal in any level of the DepEd basic education program,
how are you going to implement in your school the integrated teaching
requirements of K to 12 curriculums so that teachers can properly employ them
in teaching their respective disciplines/subject areas?
program. DepEd, in coordination with CHED, shall ensure that the Teacher Education
curriculum offered in Teacher Education Institutions will meet the necessary quality
standards for new teachers. Training of teachers will follow the phased-in introduction of
the enhanced curriculum.
