Bolt Torque - Astm & Iso

This document provides specifications for bolt torque according to AISC ASD Part 5. It defines the minimum bolt pretension as 70% of the tensile strength minus the stress area. The torque moment is calculated as a factor K multiplied by the bolt diameter and pretension. Two tables are included that list various bolt sizes, their stress areas, recommended pretension loads, and assembly torques for bolt classes 8.8 and 10.9.

Bolt Torque

According to AISC ASD PART 5

Specification for Structural Joint Using ASTM A325 or ASTM A490 Bolts

ASTM F3125 and ATSM F568 Grade A325 class 8.8 type 1, is equivalent to ISO 898-1- Class 8.8
ASTM F3125 and ASTM F568 Grade A490 class 10.9 type 1, is equivalent to ISO 898-1- Class
10.9

Specified minimum bolt pretension Tm = 70% - Ft - As

Tm = Minimum pretension
Ft = Tensile Strength for bolt material
As = Stress area of bolt

Torque moment Ma = K. d. Tm [Nm]

K = factor depending on friction on thread not face
d = Shaft diameter of the bolt [mm]
Tm = pretension in bolt [kN]
