She developed a plan of investigation where she outlined researching articles and a video on approaches to reducing racism. Yashica reflected on how the sources helped her understand influencing others, including diverse perspectives, and confronting racism directly. She contributed to a group report analyzing sources on the effects of racism and factors influencing racism. Yashica's SBA included rubrics for participation, group work quality, and her final marks.

CARIBBEAN SECONDARY EDUCATION CERTIFICATE

SCHOOL-BASED ASSESSMENT
ENGLISH A

Topic: Racism
Sub-topic: “Ways to reduce racism in today’s society”

Name: Yashica Bogle
Candidate Number: 1002850115
Centre: Titchfield High Extension
Centre Number: 100285
Teacher’s Name: Kerine Bell
Territory: Jamaica
Year: 2021
Plan of Investigation

Racism

The topic of interest is ways to reduce racism in today’s society. The reason for choosing this
topic is that racism has been an issue for many years and people have suffered greatly because of
it and also to educate others.

Expected benefits are furthering my knowledge, improving my grammar and vocabulary,

enhancing my writing and communication skills and hopefully my comprehension skills.

I will gather information by reading two articles from the internet, using my analyzing skills to
do so and watch a video.

Reflection 1

The understanding I received from the first article is that racism can be reduced by addressing
acts of injustice from institutional and individual sources due to a person’s race, influencing
others which includes motivation and capability to influence others and also by including
persons who reflect ethnic and linguistic diversity which can be structured to ensure cooperation
and equal status roles for persons from different races and backgrounds.

Upon reading the second article I learnt that racism can be reduced by encouraging egalitarian
thoughts and actions, getting to know someone personally and by confronting racism head on
which can be very useful.

Last but not least the video I used from youtube helped me to realize parents should teach
toddlers to treat each other equally, do not judge one another because of race or beliefs and to
encourage families to read more diversity books about family.
Reflection 2

The second article that I found is titled “Ideas for Reducing Racism”
Reflection 3

Doing my English SBA has helped to further my knowledge on the subject

Written Group Report
“Racism” was the theme chosen by this group. The sub-topics chosen by the group members are
“ How can racism be seen in the media”, “ Factors that contribute to racism”, “Effects of racism
on mental health”, and “Ways to reduce racism in today’s society”. These topics were chosen
based on the interest that each of the group members had pertaining to the theme. After each
topic was chosen they were sent to the teacher for corrections.
In order to write this report we first made the following questions, “Is racism overlook on
social media?”, “What are some effects of racism?” and “Can your environment be a factor of
racism?”. We took everyone’s artefacts and analyzed them to see which ones were best suitable
to answer the questions. The artefacts that we selected are, “Social media helps reveal people’s
racist views” by Imran Awan, published by theconversation.com. “The effects of racism on
health” by Joanne Lewsley, via ww.medicalnewstoday.com and, “ Why are people racist.pdf” by
the Australian Human Rights Commission, published by ww.humanrights.gov.au. Using both
informal and formal language these artefacts mainly target victims of racism and those who want
to learn more about racism.
“Why are people racist.pdf” answers the question “can your environment be a factor of racism”
by stating that, hanging around people from the same culture everyday can cause other cultures
to look weird to you and cause you to feel that your race is superior to others. “The effects of
racism on mental health” answers the question ‘what are some effects of racism” by outlining
that racism negatively affects your physical and mental health by causing stress which can raise
your blood pressure and cause depression and anxiety among other psychological issues. “Social
media helps reveal people’s racist views” answers the question “Is racism overlooked in the
media” by saying that internet users often make racist comments online which are disguised as
harmless jokes and are regularly accepted and liked by unaware users which causes racism to be
overlooked in the media.
