North South University: Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering EEE111, FINAL EXAM, Spring 2021

The document provides instructions and problems for an Analog Electronics I final exam. It outlines the honor policy, suggests best practices for the exam such as double checking circuit diagrams and citing internet sources, and presents 4 problems related to transistors, Darlington pairs, sinusoidal input circuits, and JFETs. It also offers an optional bonus problem for students to creatively explain any additional topic from the course.

EEE111, FINAL EXAM, Spring 2021
Analog Electronics I
Total Marks: 58, Time: 5 days

Just do your best ^_^.

But please understand that failure to comply with the Honor Policy will result in an F, regardless of
‘circumstances.

Please rewrite the following statements at the beginning of your exam paper and provide truthful answers and
your signature where appropriate.

(a) I give my word that I followed the Honor Policy fully for this assessment. _____Yes
(sign)_______________
(b) It took me ___________ hours and __________ minutes to complete this assessment.
(c) I have provided all source citations from places I have taken inspiration/help from, in the appropriate
places in my answer sheet. _________Yes (sign) _______

Some suggestions:
• Be very careful that you are analyzing the CORRECT circuit. If you copy circuit wrongly on your notebook,
unfortunately instructor would not be able to provide ANY marks to you even if you correctly analyze.
Double check all component values, wire connections etc. when copying the circuit from question paper to
your notebook.
• Please put a box around the final answer of each segment.
• Please provide references to internet sources WITHOUT ANY OMISSION. Put the references RIGHT
AFTER the segment it has been used. Please provide full reference, so that Instructor may easily access the
reference if needed. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a hard URL link. It can be as following examples:
Wikipedia entry on ‘XYZ’, or the second image in Google search (from the website abcd.com) using the
keyword ‘ABC’
• Please consult the book and class lectures first. THEN consult internet if required, within the ethical
boundaries.
• Understand that – even a line copy-pasted from the internet directly, even if you cite it, is plagiarism – unless
in quote. And your answers for this course – shouldn’t be in quotes, really.
PROBLEM 1
Marks: 2+3+4 = 9

(a) What are the two main applications of a transistor?

(b) Observe the following graph. BASED ON THIS GRAPH ONLY, mention two benefits of Silicon diode of
Germanium diode

(c ) Consider a device for which the following graph holds. If the peak current is increased from 10mA to
30mA, what would be the percentage increase in relative efficiency? Explain your work.
PROBLEM 2
Marks: 2+1+4+4+(3+3) +4+4 = 25

Consider the following circuit with two BJTs Q1 and Q2 in Darlington configuration.

(a) Make the circuit DC analysis ready.

(b) Show the DC voltage supply separately (open it up).
(c) Draw the input loop and show all variables clearly.
(d) Draw the outout loop and show all variables clearly.
(e) Apply KVL on the input loop. Then use the relation 𝐼𝐸2 = 𝐼𝐵1 (1 + 𝛽1 )(1 + 𝛽2 ) to find the base current
of Q1.
(f) Calculate the power dissipated at the base resistor .
(g) Find the potential at the emitter leg of Q2.
PROBLEM 3
Marks: 6+(5+6) +3 = 20

Consider the following circuit. The circuit is injected with an input voltage Vin.

Vin is sinusoidal in nature with rms value of 2.83V and frequency of 60Hz.

(a) Draw the input voltage waveform with as much details as possible. Show ALL your work. Remember,
any help you take from the internet for formula or otherwise – it MUST be cited, else you may risk not
getting any mark for at all.
(b) Draw the output voltage waveform and the output current waveform. Do show some analysis, so that the
instructor is convinced that the work is your own. If there is discrepancy (e.g. lack of analysis – but then
suddenly perfect graph appears) – it might put your work in question. However, emphasis of grading will
be on the graphs So, the final two graphs (output voltage and output current) should be presented nicely at
the end of this segment.

(c) Calculate the average DC voltage at the output. Think carefully and show your work.
PROBLEM 4
Marks: 4

Consider a JFET, whose maximum drain current is 7 mA, but currently has a drain current of 2mA running. The
pinch-off voltage is -5V. What is the gate-to-source controlling voltage? Show all steps. Establish all variables
properly before using them. – This is a very rudimentary question. If you are not well prepared for JFET section and
are about to take preparation from scratch, I would recommend that you study from the handful of pages in the book
associated with the topic and/or the videos I posted. It will save you time. If you plan to watch videos on the internet –
you would probably get lost!

BONUS ->
Marks: 5

Consider a topic, any topic, that you have studied very well for this course, but LIh didn’t ask about it in the above
exam. Take one page – and feel free to creatively write down about that topic. It could be in your own words, or
diagrams and sketches, doodles - whatever. The goal is as follows: it can serve as a one-page tutorial of that topic
- any junior or new student studying 111 in coming semesters can look at your page and get an idea about that
topic :D
