Bughao, Maria Angelika A. People and Earth'S Ecosystem Pasco, Rose Anne Kristel B. Mrs. Belinda Liwanag BSN - 1B

The document discusses three major environmental issues affecting the Philippines: 1) Decline of natural resources and biodiversity due to habitat degradation, deforestation, and pollution. 2) An alarming waste problem as the country generates more solid waste and improper garbage disposal pollutes waterways. 3) Climate change and global warming from increased greenhouse gases, which raises sea levels and temperatures and intensifies natural disasters, threatening agriculture, infrastructure and health. These issues harm the environment and people's health and livelihoods if left unaddressed.

1. What are the current environmental issues that affect people and environment in the Philippines? (Give
3 specific problems, of our country)
A. Decline of Natural Resources and Biodiversity
B. Alarming Waste Problem in the Philippines
C. Climate change and Global Warming caused by increased of Greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.
2. Explain why these conditions post as problems to the environment and to the Filipino people.
A. Decline of Natural Resources and Biodiversity
The Philippines is suffering from degradation of the natural
environment. Biodiversity declines may diminish human
wellbeing by decreasing the services that ecosystems can
provide for people. The continuing habitat degradation and
forestland conversion are major threats to Philippine
biodiversity.
● Forest degradation caused by destructive human
activities, including agriculture, mining, logging,
timber poaching and wildlife trafficking, remains a
big challenge.
● The massive destruction of coastal and marine
environment because of unsustainable fishing
practices and pollution factored in aggravates the
situation and paints a dim picture of the future of the
Philippine economy.
● The burgeoning human population against a limited land base causes forestland
conversion. The remaining forest habitats in key biodiversity areas are slowly being
threatened by the creeping incursion of perennial crops such as coconut, abaca, as well as
annual crops such as corn. Different areas in the Philippines have been exposed to this
threat in varying degrees.
● Pollution here in the Philippines can be seen as an unusual level of a substance which
disturbs the surrounding environment and especially biodiversity. Due to industrialization
pollution has become one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity. High levels of
pollution results in toxicity.

B. Alarming Waste Problem in the Philippines

The Philippines generates more solid waste as
population increases, living standards are enhanced,
and urban and rural areas are being developed.
In the Philippines, flood is inevitable, the problem is
made worse because garbage dumping in the river is
a habit practiced by many Filipinos. The country is
one of the world’s top three worst offenders of
plastic pollution.

Waste problems can harm the health of all people. You can actually see a thick layer of garbage
floating in the waterways as if it were some island. Even when we are outside, we can see a
bunch of trash scattering all over the place. If only Filipinos learn how to discipline themselves
on their waste and even taking care of their environment none of these will become a problem.
Filipinos should prohibit the littering, throwing, dumping of waste matters in public places, or
causing or permitting the same.
C. Climate change and Global Warming caused by increased of Greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.
One of the most pressing environmental issues
impacting the Philippines is climate change. As
an island country located in the Southeast Asia
Pacific region, the Philippines is extremely
vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Some of these impacts include increased
frequency and severity of natural disasters, sea
level rise, extreme rainfall, global warming,
resource shortages, and environmental
degradation. All of these impacts together have
greatly affected the Philippines’ agriculture,
water, infrastructure, human health, and coastal
ecosystems and they are projected to continue having devastating damages to the economy and
society of the Philippines
Diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, cholera have increased throughout the years. Climate
change impacts on coastal zones and marine ecosystems caused massive coral bleaching
especially in 1998 due to elevated sea temperature and fish kills and red tides like the one that
occurred in 1992 which was an El Nino period.
