Applus+K2 - CHIME and CUPS

CHIME & CUPS are non-destructive testing methods used to detect corrosion and pitting under pipe supports and clamps that cannot be inspected through normal methods. CHIME uses through-thickness inspection to detect gradual thickness degradation in pipes, while CUPS uses reflection to find small and large corrosion pits externally on annular plates. Both methods use ultrasonic probes to inspect large inaccessible areas with a single pass and provide sensitive detection of internal and external corrosion without removing supports.

CHIME & CUPS

Creeping Head Inspection Method & Corrosion Under Pipe Support

Applus+ K2 CHIME and CUPS are used for detecting corrosion and pitting under clamps and pipe
supports where it is not directly feasible to be inspected by normal inspection method. CHIME is
based on the through thickness technique and is good for detecting gradual thickness degrada-
tion and insensitive to small pitting. It can be carried out on pipes. CUPS is based on reflection
principles and is good for the detection of small and large corrosion pitting but insensitive for
graduation degradation of wall thickness. It can be conducted externally on annular plates and the
whole area can be covered by swivelling the probe.
