Volvo td73 Cooling System
Volvo td73 Cooling System
Description
The engine has thermostatically controlled fuel cooling and coolant circulation is provided by a centrifugal pump, Fig., which is
driven from the engine timing gear.
Figure 1
Coolant pump driven by gear
The coolant is pumped by the coolant pump to a distributor channel in the cylinder block and runs around the cylinder liners
and runs up through the cylinder heads, Fig.
Figure 2
Cooling system
From each cylinder head and from the engine cooler, the coolant passes up to the thermostat housing. efore coolant reaches
thermostat opening pressure, it circulates through the engine without passing through the radiator. It then passes through a by
pass line under the thermostat and directly back to the suction side of the pump. hen coolant temperature has risen to a
particular value, the thermostat opens and releases coolant to the radiator at the same time as the by pass line is closed, also
see thermostat.
The coolant in the engine is heated by . F , this e cess heat is dissipated by the radiator.
The cooling system works at a certain pressure, reducing the danger of boiling if temperature becomes high. If pressure
becomes higher than normal, a pressure valve on the filler cap opens.
hen the engine has a charge air cooler, this must also be cooled. If the charge air cooler is used to raise engine output, the
coolant is taken from the engine block in to radiator and then on to the suction side of the pump. irculation is provided by the
ordinary water pump which is then e uipped with another type of impeller which increases coolant flow through the engine
compared to engines without charge air cooler, see Fig.
ngines which have a charge air cooler for environmental reasons low emissions design have a separate coolant pump for the
charge air cooler. oolant is then taken directly from the lower part of the radiator coldest and through the charge air cooler
back to the radiator, see Fig.
