Driving Without Wheels - Flying Without Wings.: Maglev Trains

Maglev trains use magnetic levitation to float and move along a guideway without making contact. They can travel at over 600 kmph, making them one of the fastest modes of transportation after air travel. The first working linear induction motor was developed in 1940 by a British scientist. Germany built the first dedicated maglev test track in 1984, achieving speeds up to 420 kmph. The first commercial maglev line opened in Shanghai in 2004 and remains operational today. Maglev trains use electromagnetic or electrodynamic suspension for levitation and linear induction motors for propulsion. While very fast, maglev infrastructure is also very expensive to build. Several countries have proposed new maglev lines to connect major cities.

INTRODUCTION

Maglev=Magnetic+Levitation
●Anything which may levitate (raise or float) by means of
magnetic power is simply called as magnetic levitation.
Maglev trains works on the same principle.
●Maglev trains are magnetically propelled vehicle that float
over a guide way and can travel at a speed more than
600kmph.
●After air travel it’s the fastest media of transport.
●A maglev train floats about 10mm above the guideway.
HISTORY
● 1940,a British scientist named Eric Laithwaite who was also a professor at
Imperial College London, developed first full size working linear induction motor.
● Linear induction motor do not require physical contact between vehicle and
guideway this concept was the road for the development of maglev trains.
●In 1970 Laithwaite succeeded in the development of a new arrangement of
magnets
that allowed a single motor to produce both lift and forward thrust.
●He worked on this concept with British Rail Research Division, and in 1984 first
commercial maglev was run on an elevated 600m track between Birmingham
airport to Birmingham international railway station at speed of 42 kmph.
This track was closed in year 1995 due to reliability problem.
●German shown a lot of interest in this area and in year 1984 they constructed
a dedicated 31.5 km test track.
●This track was constructed by TRANSPID company for the research and
development on maglev train and they succeeded to great extent by achieving
a top speed of 420 kmph. The trains also carry passenger for joy ride.
● In year 2006,an accident killed 23 people when the train collide with the
maintenance car which was on the track for its maintainace duty.Afterthat no
people were carried.
● In 2011 its license expired and is not renewed. In 2012 its demolition
permission was given for its facilities including the track and factory.
● 2004,first high speed train opened to public in Shanghai on a track 30.5
kilometer and is still operational.
● A maglev train has to perform three basic function.
a.LEVITATION
b.PROPULSION
c.GUIDANCE
Levitation Techniques
1 ● ELECTROMAGNETIC SUSPENSION(EMS) 2 ● ELECTRODYNAMIC SUSPENSION(EDS)
●Levitation by attraction. ●Levitaion by repulsion
●The train and track both has ●the train has superconducting
electromagnet, when electricity is electromagnet and the track has
passed in the same direction through electromagnet.when train runs
them, they attract each other. magnetic field is induced in the
coils and repulsive force is
generated.
Propulsion

RESULTANT

●An electric current is passed through electromagnet on the guide walls of

the guideway. This creates a magnetic field that attracts and repels the
superconducting magnets on the train and propels the train forward. Braking is
accomplished by reversing the current direction so that it is slowed by
attractive and repulsive forces.
EMS vs EDS
EMS EDS
●DYNAMICALLY UNSTABLE. ●DYNAMICALLY STABLE
Basic principle is that magnetic attraction is Minor change in distance increases the repulsive
inversely proportional to the cube of distance force and repel the magnets to their original
between them. Slight change in the distance position. While slight increase distance greatly
between them will bring great variation in reduces the force and again return to the right
attractive forces. separation.
●WORK AT ALL SPEED. ●WORK AT SPEED GREATER THAN 30kmph.
At low speed magnetic field induced is not
sufficient to levitate the train, that's why train is
provided with wheels to attain the minimum
speed of 30kmph.
●SPEED IS LOWER THAN EDS SYSTEM ●SPEED IS HIGHEST
●COMPARATIVELY LOWER LOAD CARRYING ●HIGH LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY.
CAPACITY.
ADVANTAGE
●Negligible resistance provide swift movement with speed greater than 600kmph.
S
●Use 30% less energy than normal trains.
●Provide more safety than air transport.
●No wheels, no noise.
●Needs a little maintenance, since the train never touches the guideway, which
reduces the wear and tear.
●Work in all weather condition.
DISADVANTAGES
●High cost of construction. For one km of construction the cost is 18 million
us dollar. This is much more expensive than conventional trains.
●Needs dedicated track for its operation.
●High magnetic field creates problem for person with heart problem.
MAGLEV TRAINS vs AEROPLANES
●More efficient for short journey than air
travel in terms of total time of travel.
A research says that when we travel
a distance less than 700km by aeroplane then
total time of travel is not very efficient as
compare to maglev train for the same.
●Aeroplanes consumes high amount of fuel, and
its price is increasing day by day.

●INDIA
In 6 sept,2016 Indian railway released expression of interest for maglev system. After that
3 company (2 from America and 0ne from japan) have shown their interest .Indian railway
will collaborate with the company as a technology partner to make a joint venture company.
The whole responsibility will be on a selected company for the design and construction of
elevated track and trains and also its maintenance.
The company has to submit their plan for 200 to 500km,and also have to show its trial run
on a track of 10-15km.
The estimated speed is 400-500kmph.
