LEARNING GUIDE
Third Industrial Revolution advances include the birth of the Internet and the World Wide Web, the
development of information technology, the wide-scale production of computers, and the development
of user-friendly software.
Information Age - also known as the Computer Age or Digital Age, was characterized by a
change in focus from industry to information.
Fourth Industrial Revolution “is characterized by a fusion of technologies that are blurring the lines
between the physical, digital and biological spheres” (Schwab, 2016, para. 2). Rapid advances in
disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, 3-D printing, and
nanotechnology are serving to merge the real world with the technological world (Medical Futurist,
2017; Newman, 2017)
The nurse who adopts technology to enhance teaching and learning must not only have a basic
understanding of the technology itself but must also be able to integrate the technology into an
educational plan that is based on sound educational principles and addresses issues such as access, cost,
support, equipment, process, and outcomes.
If technology has changed the way people learn, then it must also change the way nurses teach.
Educators, including nurses and other health professionals responsible for teaching, must be prepared
to meet the learning needs and learning styles of 21st-century children and adults (Henriksen, Mishra, &
Fisser, 2016).
How has technology affected health education?
The infrastructure now exists to link people around the world to one another, to nurses
and other healthcare professionals, and to a vast array of Web-based information.
Internet World Stats (2017), an international website that provides comprehensive and
current information on Internet usage, reports that the North American continent is
home to approximately 365 million people, of whom 320 million are Internet users and
224 million are Facebook subscribers. Looking specifically at adults living in the United
States, only 15% report not using the Internet (Zickuhr, 2013).
Once a slow and tedious process, connecting to the Internet has become easier with the
advent of high-speed data services.
The majority of Americans have the hardware necessary to access the Web. A Pew
Research Center survey found that 84% of Americans had at least one smartphone, 80%
of households have a laptop or desktop computer, and 68% of households contain at
least one tablet (Olmstead, 2017). 552 Chapter 13 Technology in Education
New and emerging technologies have had a significant influence on educators and learners in
many ways. Most important, access to information bridges the gap between teacher and
learner.
The teacher is no longer the person who holds all answers or who is solely responsible for
imparting knowledge.
Today’s educators are becoming facilitators of learning rather than providers of information and
are striving to create collaborative atmospheres in their teaching and learning environments.
Changes in the Behavior in Healthcare in the INFORMATION AGE
1. Technology and the increased accessibility to information it offers have empowered and
enlightened consumers, encouraging them to form new partnerships with their healthcare
providers.
2. Today’s consumers often enter the healthcare arena with information in hand. They are
prepared to engage in a dialogue with their healthcare providers about their diagnoses and
treatments.
3. Nurses can no longer assume that the patients they see in a hospital or clinic will have little
information other than what educators have given them or that they will not have explored the
treatment options available to them.
4. Today’s e-consumers and e-caregivers have the means to easily access networks of other
patients and healthcare providers worldwide. Online support groups, blogs, and discussion
groups where healthcare consumers can share experiences are readily available
5. Nurses must now be prepared not only to use technology in education but also to help patients
access information, evaluate the information they find, and engage in discussions about the
information that is available.
6. Technology has given rise to a dramatic increase in educational opportunities for nurses and
other healthcare providers. Nurses seeking advanced degrees and credentials or continuing
education credits can now study at colleges and universities offering distance education
programs in a wide range of subject areas.
(1-2) What is the difference between the INTERNET versus World Wide Web (www)?
1.-2. The difference between internet and WWW, is the Internet is a set of many networks of
networks. It serves as Big-books Store. Internet usually connects millions of computers together
internationally. It forms network in which any computer can communicate with any other
computer as long as they are both connected to it. Information that spreads over the internet
does so via a variety of languages known as protocols. It is decentralized. And each internet
computer is independent. However, there are a variety of ways to access the internet. Through
Internet we can able to do an Electronic Communications/messaging, Electronic discussion and
online chats. While the World Wide Web is access via internet which has compilations of
information. Without Internet, it won’t work/ you cannot access it. It is a system of internet
servers that support specially formatted documents. It is an information-sharing medium that
usually built on top of the internet. The web uses the HTTP protocol, only one of the languages
spoken over the internet, to transmit data. Web services, which use HTTP that permits
applications to communicate in order to exchange business logic, use the the web to share
information. The web also utilizes browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, to access Web
documents called webpages that are linked to each other via hyperlinks. Web documents also
contain graphics, sounds, text and video. Applications called web browsers that make it easy to
access the World Wide Web. It offers a wider aspect of information.
The INTERNET
A. Electronic Communications/Messaging
a. E-mail - an electronic file that is sent to an e-mail address using an e-mail program
that allows the user to create, send, and store messages. E-mail programs are
widely available and typically free of charge.
b. Texting - is a way to communicate via a mobile phone using a cell phone number.
Reasons why knowledge of the World Wide Web is critical for nurses:
1. Nurses can expect to see patients enter the healthcare arena, having already searched the Web
for information.
2. The World Wide Web is a tremendous resource for both consumer and professional education.
To use the Web effectively, nurses must possess information literacy skills and be prepared to
3. The World Wide Web provides a powerful mechanism for nurses to offer healthcare education
to a global audience.
II. Determining accuracy, completeness and full understanding of the information patient has
found.
a. It will provide the nurse educator with the opportunity to review Web-based
information with the patient. Not only can the nurse introduce websites that are
relevant to the patient’s needs, but he or she can also review some of the sites the
patient has been using.
b. It will provide a chance to teach patients information literacy skills.
(3-4) What is the difference between INFORMATION LITERACY and COMPUTER LITERACY?
3.-4. The difference between Information Literacy and Computer Literacy is that Information literacy is a
basic human right that an individual must possessed. It usually promotes social inclusion in every region.
It literally empowers people, either you’re rich or poor in seeking, evaluate, use and create information
effectively and participating ethically in any learning aspects. Primarily, it is to aim your personal,
educational, occupational or basic goals. Being information literate extends beyond technical skills and
gives way to do a critical thinking using the information that we usually found either online, print or any
medium. It is a set of integrated abilities that entails reflective discovery of information, value and uses
the information in generating new wisdom. Has four core competencies; Articulate the specific
information needed, Access information using appropriate search tools/engine, Evaluate the quality,
usefulness, & relevance of information and Ethically communicate both synthesized and new
knowledge. While the Computer Literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use the computers
and other technology efficiently. Being a computer literate means you can able to used the computer in
performing basic task. It includes utlizing platforms, basic software systems, search engines, word
processing, spreadsheets and browser basics. Computer Literacy jives in with information Literacy.
Because when you are both literate with these 2, you can able to discover a valuable information
through the use of computers. It secures your work’s quality.
1. Reduce a problem or topic to a searchable command that can be used with a search engine or
search directory.
2. Categorize webpages according to their purpose.
3. Identify sources of potential bias that may influence the content or the manner by which the
content is presented.
4. Make a judgment as to the likelihood that the information found on the webpage is accurate
and reliable.
5. Make decisions as to the completeness or comprehensiveness of the information presented.
6. Determine the currency of the information on a webpage.
7. Identify resources to answer questions or verify assumptions made about the content of a
webpage.
Nurses, In the role of educator, can teach patients to use Web resources. It may be helpful to compile
lists of websites appropriate to the needs of different patient populations.
A. Social Media – internet sites and applications that allow users to create, share, edit and interact
with online content” (Gagnon & Sabus, 2015, p. 407)
9. Facebook
10. Youtube
11.Twitter
12. Instagram
13. Wattpad
many social media sites are used to market unhealthy products or harmful behaviors.
there could be unintended violations of state and federal privacy laws.
maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of patients is of utmost importance.
Everything posted on social media site is public information and may be widely distributed.
14.-15. The difference between the Webcasts and Webinars is Webcast is a live broadcast via internet. It
is an audio or video from a meeting or event. It is a real-time broadcast of an existing (physical) event. It
allows for active conversation among the webcasters and their viewers. It’s more of a television show
than a meeting. Can accommodate large population so that it utilized large audience. While the
Webinars is a seminar conducted over the internet. It is a short term for web-based seminar. It is a
presentation, lecture, workshop or seminar using video conference software. It often includes many of
the options available with online meetings, such as Q&A, polls, whiteboard and markup abilities. It is
designed for smaller groups than webcast, it is to a form a meeting-sized groups.
“Technology is exciting and offers many advantages for both consumers and nurses. However,
technology devoid of teaching and learning principles cannot stand alone in consumer or professional
education. The challenge for nurse educators is to keep abreast of the best technology and the
educational principles that together enable and support a high-quality, enriching consumer learning
experience.”
