CASE: The Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India: In

Service for Sight

With the aim of providing affordable eye care services to a country which has about
20million blind citizens and 80% of it due to curable cataracts, Dr. V. Started, the Aravind
Eye Hospital. Dr. V. was passionate to eradicate needless blindness. The aim was to provide
eye care even to those who are ignorant and unaware about their eye problems using a
different model from others models of social and commercial entrepreneurship.

There are not very often many organizations wherein every employee works towards a single,
unified and impactful goal to understand the lives of its customers, and with the vision of
improving them by each and every employee of the organization.

There are small things when done right, allow employees to be accountable and empower
them to lead the way in their own respective work. So, it’s not just imparting the strong sense
of purpose, but guiding and encouraging employees to achieve small goals to make the big
vision happen. Employees and the doctors advising on the best possible solution to the
patients – this resulting in a very high level of association and customer loyalty towards
hospital and of course a repeat customer base of close to 100%.

Aravind has proved that by using Human Resource efficiently and by bringing innovation in
Healthcare, affordable services with high standards can be provided even at the remotest
part of the country. It has also brought this concept for debate that the techniques and
interventions used in any Industry can be successfully employed in the Healthcare Industry.
Ultimately, it revives the concept that if an Organization is willing to serve the masses with
quality product and services, it is bound to generate revenue.
