ICDS
Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) is a government programme in
India which provides food, preschool education, primary healthcare,

An anganwadi worker is required to organise and provide supplementary

educate mothers to look after the normal nutritional needs of their children. It is
thus important to an anganwadi worker to have basic knowledge about food and
nutrition.

All of us including children need food for the following functions :

01. Providing energy.

02. Maintenance of growth and repair of the body.

03. Protecting the body against disease. In order to keep a child in good health,
his diet should include a variety of foods, so that all functions are performed
well. Such a diet is called Balanced Diet.
PRE - SCHOOL EDUCATION

Non-formal pre school education is an important component of ICDS

programme which is essential for allround development of the children. Pre-
School education is provided to children in the age group of 3 to 6 years. As the
name suggests, formal education is not important to the children but children
are encouraged to grow at their own pace. The anganwadi should thus become
the first step in the process of education before the child goes to primary school.
Pre-school education thus becomes a link between the anganwadi and the
primary school.

IMMUNIZATION

Immunization of pregnant women and infants protects children from six vaccine
preventable disease-poliomyelits, diphtheria, pertusis, tetanus, tuberculosis and
measles. These are major preventable causes of child mortality, disability,
morbidity and related malnutrition.

HEALTH CHECK-UPS

This includes health care of children less than 6 years of age, antenatl care of
expectant mothers and postnatal care of nursing mothers. The various health
services provided for children by Anganwadi workers include regular health
