Exploratory marketing has led to a concept proposal for a new machine to crush oyster
shells, which are fed to chickens as a dietary supplement for improving eggshell
strength to minimize eggshell breakage. The proposed crushing machine has an
estimated torque versus angular displacement curve as shown in the Figure and is to
be driven by a constant- torque electric motor at a rotational speed of 3450 rpm. It is
being proposed to use a constant-thickness disk flywheel to limit speed fluctuation to
an acceptable range. As an initial configuration, it is being proposed to cut the
flywheel from a 30-mm thick steel plate annealed low-carbon steel Sy = 300 MPa, g =
76.81 kN/m3.
a) Assuming that there are no other significant rotating masses in the system, you
are asked to estimate the flywheel diameter for satisfactory crusher operation. A
mounting hole at the center of the disk is estimated to be 50 mm in diameter.
b) A minimum safety factor of 4 based on the governing failure mode is being
proposed by engineering management. Would the constant-thickness disk
flywheel resulting from (a) meet this proposed safety criterion?
