Uniform Circular Motion Lab Report

This document summarizes an experiment on uniform circular motion. It describes measuring the mass, radius, and velocity of a metal disk attached to a string and swung in a circular motion. The experiment found the radius and velocity were directly proportional, while the radius and centripetal acceleration were inversely proportional. The conclusion is the experiment helped understand uniform circular motion practically, though some errors occurred that could be improved upon for future experiments.

Introduction
Centripetal force is a net force that
acts on an object to keep it moving
along a circular path (Khan Academy,
2019). An object in circular motion
has an acceleration toward the circle
center due to an unbalanced force
toward the circle center. Uniform
circular motion is the movement of
an object at constant speed around a
circle with a fixed radius. The word
uniform itself meaning unchanging in
the form of character. Uniform
circular motion can be said as the
motion at the constant speed. When
the rope is spinned perpendicularly
to the angle of the arms. The uniform
circular motion will make the object
constantly changes its direction. This
makes the centripetal force occur.
Introduction

In this experiment, we will be studying

study the forces that are involved in
the motion of a body moving with
constant speed in a circular path
practically.
Objective

To study the forces involved in the

motion of a body moving with
constant speed in a circular path.
Material
1). Pink ball
2). String
3). Clip
4). Weight hanger
5). Timer
6). Electronic balance
7). Measuring tape
Set Up
Procedure
1. Measure the mass (m) of the tiny metal
disk.
2. Pass the string through the tube and
attach the disk to the top of the tube.
3. Hang a hooked mass (M) of 175 g on the
other end of the string.
4. Hold the tube vertical and swing the disk
in a circular path in a horizontal plane.
5. Adjust the speed of rotation of the disk
and the radius so that the hooked mass is
just supported by the string.
Procedure
6. Start the motion with the tube at arm's
length and above the head.
7. Count and record the number of
revolution in 30 seconds.
8. Grasp the string at the bottom of the
tube to mark the position of the string
while the disk is moving. Measure the
distance (r) from the top of the tube to the
center of the disk.
9. Change the radius (r) of rotation. Use
smaller value than larger one.
10. Repeat steps 3 - 9 using hooked mass
of 200g.

Analysis
Based on our data and results, the radius
and the velocity are proportional. The more
the radius increases, the more the velocity
increases. On the other hand, the radius
and the centripetal acceleration are
inversely proportional. The more the radius
increases, the more the centripetal
acceleration decreases. Moreover, the
speed is proportional to centripetal force;
when the speed increases, centripetal force
also increases. The direction of force we
exerted on the metal object is perpendicular
when we swung a metal object at the end of
a string in a circular path. If the string that
holds the whirling metal objects in its
circular path breaks, there will be no force.
This causes itto move in a straight line path
which is supported by Newton's First law of
motion.
Analysis
There are 3 key ideas behind motion
in a circular path with constant
speed. Firstly, In terms of velocity can
be inferred that the speed remains
constant but the direction is changed.
Secondly, the acceleration is pointed
to the center. The acceleration
isperpendicular to each other and is
changing but it has a constant
magnitude. Last but not least, the
centripetal force pointed to the
center. The acceleration and
centripetal force are the same in both
directions and they are changing.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the results in the lab
shows that our group contains lots of
errors. Firstly, we didn’t hold the
string perpendicularly. Secondly, we
didn’t remain radius at the same
value and last we might measure it or
count it wrongly. However, this
experiment helps us understand
more about the uniform circular
motion practically.
Recommendation
If we were to do this experiment
again, we would improve every error
that had occurred in our experiment;
hold the string at 90 degrees, count
the round accurately and remain the
radius in the same position.
