Wheelbase alterations
Introduction
The instructions for alterations to the chassis length refer
to FM, FH and NH Rigid trucks (RIGID) and Tractors
(TRACTOR) 4x2.

The chassis lengths and values presented in the tables


on the following pages refer to trucks as they are pro-
duced in the factory at the time when this issue went to
print. Modifications may not be made to trucks with dif-
ferent chassis lengths and values to those shown in the T9006101
tables, without special permission from the Volvo Truck
Corporation.

The Volvo warranty ceases to be valid if the restrictions


below are not complied with, or the instructions are oth-
erwise not followed.

Brake lines should be jointed as per Section 4.70


”Brakes”.

Electrical cables should be jointed as per Section 4.50


”Jointing, cable routing and repairs”.

Propeller shafts should be installed and fitted as per


Section Section 5.20 “Propeller shafts – Outside South
America” and the Service information, group 45, ”Pro-
peller shafts”.

Restrictions
• TRACTORS with bogies must not have the wheel-
base altered without authorisation from Volvo Truck
Corporation.

• RIGID vehicles with inner liners must not be rebuilt


to TRACTORS, without authorisation from Volvo
Truck Corporation, since TRACTOR has a longer in-
ner liner than RIGID.

• TRACTOR with low chassis frame 266 mm must not


be rebuilt to RIGID without authorisation from Volvo
Truck Corporation.

• RIGID with 6 mm thick and 300 mm high chassis


frame must not be rebuilt to TRACTOR.

Permitted wheelbase (RIGID) – Outside South America


The shortest possible wheelbase is limited by the drive-
line installation. The longest possible wheelbase is
limited by the frame strength and rigidity, including the
dynamic characteristics of the truck. The table below in-
dicates the shortest and longest permitted wheelbases
for RIGID trucks.

Rigid vehicle
The shortest possible wheelbase is limited by the drive-
line installation. The longest possible wheelbase is
limited by the frame strength and rigidity, as well as by
the dynamic characteristics.

neering Department.

Crossmembers (RIGID)
The distance between two adjacent crossmembers must
not exceed 1500 mm. This applies both within the
wheelbase and to the overhang.

For wheelbase alterations on rigid vehicles (RIGID) with


chassis height 850 mm (CHH850) and 266 mm high
frame profile (FRAME88, FRAMELOW) the gearbox
crossmember must be shortened. Cut the gearbox
crossmember in half and shorten each section by 5 mm.
Weld the gearbox crossmember together again. Grind off
the weld bead and remove ignition marks, spatter and

slag. Follow the instructions for welding of frame sides
described in Section 5.10 “Work procedure (RIGID)”.
Alternatively a new, shorter gearbox crossmember can
be ordered from Volvo Parts Corporation.

Note: The welded gearbox crossmember does not


need a reinforcement profile.

Crossmembers (TRACTOR)
Crossmembers should be positioned as per the chassis
drawing.

The reinforcement, with inner liner, means that the gear-


box crossmember has to be shortened by 10 mm. Cut
the gearbox crossmember in half and shorten each sec-
tion by 5 mm. Weld the gearbox crossmember together
again. Grind off the weld bead and remove ignition
marks, spatter and slag. Follow the instructions for weld-
ing of frame sides described in Section 5.10 “Work
procedure (TRACTOR)”.

Alternatively a new, shorter gearbox crossmember can


be ordered from Volvo Parts Corporation.

Note: The welded gearbox crossmember does not


need a reinforcement profile.

Shortening of wheelbase on vehicles with rear air suspension


When shortening the wheelbase by more than 300 mm
on vehicles with air suspension (6x2 and 6x4), there is a
risk of setting the air suspension so that the rear axle
looses contact with the ground. To ensure that the rear
axle does not loose contact with the ground the vehicle
should be lowered at the front to a minimum height after
altering the wheelbase (if the vehicle has front air sus-
pension) and raised at the rear to a maximum. If the rear
axle subsequently looses contact with the ground it will
hang in its shock absorbers and at full load be pressed
down with full bellows pressure. There will then be a risk
of damaging the air suspension system, and in particular
the shock absorbers and reaction rod.

If the rear axle has lost contact with the ground the air
suspension system must be reprogrammed to ensure
that the axle resumes contact with the ground. Contact
Technical Service at Volvo Truck Corporation for assis-
tance with reprogramming and to order new data kits for
the air suspension control unit.

Gearbox crossmember
The gearbox crossmember on a tractor vehicle (TRAC-
TOR) is subjected a higher degree of stress than on a
rigid vehicle (RIGID). If a truck which was originally a 3-
axle rigid vehicle is to be used as a tractor unit, the
gearbox crossmember must accordingly be changed.

The gearbox crossmember on 3-axle tractors has thicker


plate in the crossmember and junction plate in compari-
son with a similar rigid vehicle. The member is also
attached to the chassis frame with 4 bolts (M14) per
chassis side.

Gearbox crossmembers for tractors can be ordered from


Volvo Parts Corporation.

Reinforcement profile
RIGID
Reinforcement profile 3094843 is used for rigid vehicles
(RIGID) with 300 mm high frame profile, FRAMEHIG, to
reinforce the joint where the chassis frame has been cut.

The same reinforcement profile can be used for rigid ve-


hicles with FRAME88 FRAMELOW, if the upper flange
on the reinforcement is cut.

Reinforcement profile 8150818 is used for rigid vehicles


(RIGID) with 275 mm high frame profile, FRAMEMED, to
reinforce the joint where the chassis frame has been cut.
This profile is 1600 mm long.

TRACTOR
The inner liner FRAME55, with cut upper flange as
reinforcement profile, is used as inner liner on tractor ve-
hicles (TRACTOR 4x2).

Driven bolted joints are used on TRACTORS to join the
reinforcement profile with the chassis frame.

Co-drill the bolted joint on TRACTOR with the reinforce-


ment profile and the chassis frame.

The hole diameter should be ø 13,8 mm for co-drilled


M14 joints.

A driven joint is always tightened on the nut:


Tightening torque: M14, 140 ± 20 Nm

On a rigid vehicle (RIGID) with 300 mm high frame pro-
file (FRAMEHIG) or 275 mm high profile (FRAMEMED)
the frame should be cut 1650 mm in front of the leading
drive axle.

(CHH850) and 266 mm high frame profile (FRAME88,
FRAMELOW), the frame should be cut slightly in front of
the reinforcement (inner liner) that the chassis frame has
at the rear axle/bogie.

In those cases where a rigid truck is used as a tractor


after altering the wheelbase, the frame joint should be
positioned as on a tractor. On 3-axle vehicles the gear-
box crossmember should also be replaced, please refer
to Section 5.10 “Crossmembers (RIGID)”.

TRACTOR
On a 4x2 TRACTOR the frame should be cut in the mid-
dle of the centre point of the gearbox member’s jointing
plate.

In those cases where a tractor will be used as a rigid ve-


hicle after altering the wheelbase, the frame joint should
be positioned as on a rigid truck. (This assumes that the
tractor unit frame profile corresponds to the rigid truck.)
Instructions for changing the wheelbase of the rigid truck
must then be followed, please refer to Section 5.10
“Work procedure (RIGID)”.

Reinforcement
RIGID
The frame joint should always be reinforced with a rein-
forcement profile. This should extend 400 mm on each
side of the joint(s).

For shortening, the reinforcement profiles are cut to


800 mm long pieces.

For extensions of up to 800 mm the reinforcement profile


should cover both joints. The profile is cut to the correct
length.

Two reinforcement profiles of 800 mm are used for ex-


tensions over 800 mm.

For RADT-A6 with CHH900 (FRAME77 FRAMEMED)


the reinforcement profile (8150818) should be used in
the same way as above.
For RAD-A4 and RADT-A8 wit CHH850 (FRAME88
FRAMELOW) the reinforcement profile (3094843) should
be cut 39 mm under the upper edge of the upper flange.
(There will not be enough room in the frame for the up-
per flange on the reinforcement profile.)

TRACTOR 4x2
The frame joint should always be reinforced with a
bolted reinforcement piece. If the vehicle is built with
FRAMELOW frame, the upper flange on inner liner
FRAME55 is cut as below.

Cut the upper flange on the reinforcement pieces A mm


under the upper edge of the upper flange.

• FRAME66 FRAMELOW A=35 mm

• FRAME77 FRAMELOW A=37 mm

• FRAME88 FRAMELOW A=39 mm

Chassis components
After length alterations to the chassis the removed chas-
sis components should be positioned:

• By measuring on the chassis.

• According to the chassis drawing.

• According to the adjacent hole pattern.

Work procedure (RIGID)


• Position the vehicle on a flat surface.

• Remove the propeller shafts, brake lines and electri-


cal cables, including other components at the cutting
area.

• Mark out the position for the rear measuring points


RM on the frame members with centre punch marks.
They should be at right angles to the frame web.

• Select the front measuring points FM so that the


distance to the rear measuring points RM after the
wheelbase alteration is at least 1200 mm.

• Mark out the cutting points. For shortening, mark


out two cutting points.

• Mark out the measuring points B on the frame


members with centre punch marks just off from the
cutting point.
Carefully measure and note the distance C between
the centre punch marks.

• Support the chassis members on axle stands, so


that the chassis receives sufficient support. Use a
spirit level to check that the chassis members are
horizontal.

• Cut the frame members at right angles. Cut any ex-


tension profiles to the correct length. Even off and
chamfer the weld surfaces to an external V-joint,
forming the V-joint according to the welding method
used.

• Adjust the frame to the correct distance between the


front and rear measuring points FM and RM. Fit any
extension profiles in position. The root gap for the
welding joint should be as per alternative A or B in
the adjacent diagram.

• Grind the weld bead on the top and root sides and
remove ignition marks and spatter. The grinding
should be conducted so that any grinding marks run
parallel to the frame and at right angles to the weld.
The joint should hardly be visible on completion of
the grinding.

• Remove the requisite number of rivets on the L-


profiles.

• Release the gearbox crossmember.

• Mark out the cutting point(s).

• Mark out the position for the rear measuring points


RM on the frame members with centre punch marks.
They should be at right angles to the frame web.

that the chassis receives sufficient support. Use a
spirit level to check that the chassis members are
horizontal.

• Centre the reinforcement pieces over the joint, so


that the pre-drilled ø 6 mm holes correspond with
the frame’s hole location system.

• Drill 2 ø 6 mm holes in the chassis frame that coin-


cide with the reinforcement profile’s ø 6 mm holes
and fix the reinforcement profile with 2 M6 screws.

• Drill ø 6 mm hole from the inside in the chassis


frame using the reinforcement piece as a template.

• Install the new, shorter gearbox crossmember in the


correct position, please refer to the chassis drawing.

• The screw holes used in the gearbox crossmember


before the alteration to the chassis length should be
used after the alteration, together with new holes in
the reinforcement piece.

• Any support members are fitted in the correct posi-


tion.

• Co-drill all ø 6 mm holes to ø 13,8 mm (through the


reinforcement piece, frame side, and where appro-
priate the L-profile).

• Bolt with M14 driven bolts as per Section m 1.40


”Attachment”.

• Re-fit chassis components with the existing bolts.

• Solvents must not be allowed to come in contact


with the plastic glass on lamps when cleaning.

This section includes information on propeller shafts and
their installation after alterations to wheelbases.

It is very important to select the correct type and length


of propeller shafts, and that the angle between them lies
within a certain tolerance Incorrect installation leads to
increased wear on propeller shafts, reduces the service
life of the driveline, and reduces comfort.

Shaft in vehicle
The propeller shafts used are C2045, C2055 and
C2060. They are provided with cross-toothed companion
flanges that can only be fitted together in one position.
The following tables indicate which type of propeller
shaft should be used.
A stronger propeller shaft must be selected if the engine
torque or gross train weight is exceeded.

the lengths of the shortest and longest propeller shafts. All num-
bers in between are shafts of the same type, but different
lengths. For example, part no 1067715 is a C2055 with spline
coupling and 725 mm long. The part number is marked on the
propeller shaft tube adjacent to one of the edges.
Propeller shafts with spined joints can be lengthened a
further 110 mm over and above the stated length by dis-
placing the bar union.

Critical speed
To avoid reaching the propeller shaft’s critical speed the
propeller shafts must not exceed certain lengths, please
refer to the table below.

If the critical speed is reached the deflection of the pro-


peller shaft will increase drastically until it breaks,
damaging the surrounding components and structure.

Gearboxes with overdrive (OD) have a shorter maximum


length of propeller shaft than direct drive (DD) gearboxes.

Installation
Selection of shaft
Select the same propeller shaft as the one fitted to a fac-
tory built vehicle with the corresponding driveline and
wheelbase. A shaft with standard length should always
be selected. The length is limited by the max. and min.
length for the propeller shaft in question.

On a twin shafted propeller shaft the first shaft should be


40 - 60 % of the total length. The total length is the dis-
tance between the first and last universal joint.

On a 3 shafted propeller shaft the first shaft should be


20 - 30 % of the total length. The second shaft should
be 40 - 60 % of the remaining length.

The propeller shaft with splined joint should be placed


close to the drive shaft. Companion flanges in the ends
of propeller shafts should be positioned as shown in the
adjacent figure.

Intermediate and support bearings are positioned in the


same vertical and horizontal positions as similar vehicle
variants. If there are no similar vehicle variants then the
old positions are retained, on the assumption that the
joint angles lie within the approved limits, please refer to
Section 5.20 “Joint angles”. If problems with vibrations
should occur contact the importer for help with the posi-
tioning of the bearings.

Structure of shaft
Propeller shafts are normally supplied in parts with tubu-
lar sections and companion flanges.

The propeller shaft should be assembled as per the de-


scription in the service information, group 45, ”Propeller
shafts”.

Lubrication
The universal joints are maintenance-free. They already
contain sealed-in grease.

Joint displacement
On a propeller shaft with sliding bearings, the front and
rear yokes should be in phase with each other, i.e. with

a relative displacement of 0 . This is the case with a sin-
gle propeller shaft and a rear propeller shaft on a
multiple propeller shaft.

Companion flanges
Fix the flanges together with M14 screws, grade 10.9.
Tightening torque must be 190 ± 15 Nm. Screws and
nuts can be ordered from Volvo Parts AB, part nos
1672273 and 979020.

Joint angles
The joint angle is the angle between the input and out-
put shaft on a propeller shaft.

The gearbox shaft is the input in the first joint. In the last
joint the joint angle is the one between the last propeller
shaft and rear axle inclination.


The joint angle should be between 0.5 and 8.0 . If it is

less than 0.5 the bearing races on the spider’s needle
bearings can be damaged. If the joint angle is greater

than 8.0 the flexural torque in the spider will be so
excessive that the service life of the driveline will be re-
duced.

Measuring universal joint angles


Preparations
• The vehicle is positioned on a smooth and flat sur-
face.

• Inspection and adjustment are conducted in the


same place. Do not move the truck when measuring
it.

• An empty and a fully-loaded truck must be mea-


sured.

• The trailing axle on bogie vehicles should be low-


ered.

• On 6x4 vehicles the tyres on the bogie should be of


the same type and manufacture, equally worn and
have the correct air pressure.

• The measuring points should be well cleaned.

Joint angles, vertical


The vertical angle can be measured with angle gauge
9996211, or other similar tool with a measuring accuracy

of 0,5 .

Propeller shaft variants explanation


In the FH, NH, and FM vehicles, the propeller shaft in-
stallation is carried out through a series of variants
grouped on the VIC (Vehicle Identification Card), Group
"Transmission System".

The identification card contains the following information:

F Wedge angle for the rear axle

FH, FM, and NH vehicles may have from 1 to 3 propeller


shafts connecting the gearbox to the first rear axle.

If the vehicle has just one propeller shaft, this will be


called "main propeller shaft" (E in the illustration). The
main propeller shaft contains two crossheads grooved
for sliding.

When the vehicle has two propeller shafts:

• The propeller shaft connected to the gearbox will be


called "first propeller shaft" (A in the illustration).
The first propeller shaft always contains one
crosshead and one bearing.

• The propeller shaft connected to the rear axle will


be called "main propeller shaft" (E in the illustration).

Note: For vehicles with two propeller shafts (wheelbase


from 4 300 mm - South American market): when disas-
sembling the propeller shaft, mark the flange connecting
the first propeller shaft to the main propeller shaft. Thus,
the propeller shafts original positions will be kept during
reinstallation, since these are balanced in pairs.

When the vehicle has three propeller shafts:

• The propeller shaft connected to the gearbox will be


called "first propeller shaft" (A in the illustration).

• The propeller shaft connected to the rear axle will


be called "main propeller shaft" (E in the illustration).

• The intermediate propeller shaft will be called "sec-


ond propeller shaft" (C in the illustration). The
second propeller shaft contains a crosshead and a
bearing.

Information provided on the VIC (Vehicle Identification


Card) concerning the propeller shaft installation is de-
scribed as follows:

First propeller shaft length (A)


Information showing this variant is as follows:

• PFLxxxx, where xxxx indicates the propeller shaft


length.

Example: PFL 1200, which means the first propeller


shaft is 1200 mm long from one flange to the other
flange.

Note: In a vehicle with just one propeller shaft, this vari-


ant will be UPLF.

The first bearing position is determined by the position of


the two supports fastened to the vehicle intermediate
crossmember.

Vertical support (V):


The position is indicated by numbers that determine the
height of the intermediate bearing . This numbering may
vary from 1 to 15 (engraved on the support). The variant
indicating the vertical position of the first support is
known as PSBR1–xx, where xx indicates the assem-
bling hole. Moreover, the support should be fastened in
the positionxx + 3.

Example: PSBR-1-08, which means the first vertical


support is installed in the position 8 and 11.

Note: The support P/N 3985106 is drilled from 1 to 12;


the support P/N 3985105 is drilled from 1 to 18.

Note: In a vehicle with one or two propeller shafts, this


variant will be called UPLS.

Second bearing installation position (D)


As with the first bearing, the second bearing position is
determined by the installation of the two supports fas-
tened in the vehicle intermediate crossmember.

Vertical support (V):


The assembling position is indicated by numbers that
determine the height of the intermediate bearing. This
numbering may vary from 1 to 15 (engraved on the sup-
port). The variant indicating the vertical position of the
support is known as PSBR2–xx, where xx indicates the
installation hole. Moreover, the support should be fas-
tened in the position xx + 3.

Example: PSBR2–08, which means the second vertical


support is installed in position 8 and 11.

Note: The support P/N 3985106 is drilled from 1 to 12;


the support P/N 3985105 is drilled from 1 to 18.

shaft is 1200 mm long from one flange to the other
flange, when closed.

Wedge angle in the rear axle


The variant indicating whether there are wedges or not
is located in the group "Frame, Springs, Wheels". For
certain combinations, it may be necessary to use
wedges for adjusting the rear axle inclination.

The variant indicating the installation of wedges is called


WEDGExy, where x indicates the wedge angle (it may

vary from 1 to 3 ), and y indicates the installation direc-
tion (P = positive, N = negative - refer to illustration).

If there is no need to use wedges, the variant will be


UWEDGE.

Example: WEDGE2N, which means that wedges of 2 ,
in the negative direction, should be installed.

Painting
You are often exposed to solvents and other chemical
products when painting. Use suitable protective equip-
ment, make sure that there is good ventilation, and avoid
inhaling and skin contact. Always follow the instructions
on the packaging.

For further information concerning painting work using


chemical products and suitable protective equipment
when painting, please refer to the service information,
group 18, ”Chassis painting”.

Solvents must not be allowed to come in contact with the


plastic glass on lamps when cleaning.
