Water Questions
I. PROBLEM SOLVING. Solve the problems below. Write the complete solution and box the final
answer.
Question Question
#
1 Determine the loss of head in 100m of 6-in new cast iron pipe carrying 250gpm of water. Express
you answer in SI unit. (5pts)
2. Determine the capacity (flow that the pipe could carry) of a 250mm wood-stave pipe carrying water
with a loss of head of 10m per mile. For friction factor, f, use 0.02. (5pts)
3. A new cast iron pipe 100m long and 150mm in diameter carries 250 m3/s of water. Determine the
frictional loss of head. Assume f=0.023. (5pts)
4. Determine the discharge of water through a new 600mm cast iron pipe if the loss of head in a 3 km
length is 150m. (Assume f=0.02) (5pts)
5. A pipe main consists of successive lengths with diameter of 400-mm, 300-mm, and 250-mm pipe.
With a continuous flow through the line of 1500 m3/sec of water, compute the mean velocity in
each size of pipe. (5pts)
6. A 300-mm pipe is connected by a reducer to a 100-mm pipe. Points 1 and 2 are at the same
elevation, the pressure at 1 is 200 kPa. The discharge Q is 30 cu. meters per second of water flowing
from 1 to 2 and the energy lost from 1 to 2 is equivalent to 20 kPa. Compute the pressure at 2.
(5pts)
7. Three reservoirs A, B, and C are connected respectively with pipes 1, 2, and 3 joining at a common
junction P. Reservoir A is at elevation 80 m, reservoir B at elevation 70 m and reservoir C is at
elevation 60 m. The properties of each pipe are as follows:
Pipe 1: L = 7000 m, D = 400 mm
Pipe 2: L = 6000 m, D = 350 mm
Pipe 3: L = 5500 m
The flow from reservoir A to junction P is 0.045 m3/s and f for all pipes is 0.02.
1. Find the elevation of the energy grade line at P in m. (5pts)
2. Determine the flow on pipe 2 in m /s. (5pts)
3. Compute the diameter appropriate for pipe 3 in mm. (5pts)
8. A pump draws water from reservoir A and lifts it to reservoir B as shown in the figure below. The
loss of head from A to 1 is 6 times the velocity head in the 150-mm pipe and the loss of head from
2 to B is 10 times the velocity head in the 100-mm pipe. Compute the horsepower output of the
pump and the pressure heads at 1 and 2 when the discharge is: (a) 24 L/s; (10pts) (b) 36 L/s.(10pts)
