LP Rational Function

The document outlines a lesson plan for teaching rational functions to 11th grade students in general mathematics that includes defining rational functions, representing real-life situations using rational functions through tables, graphs and equations, and solving problems involving rational functions. Sample problems are provided to assess student understanding, including representing data with rational functions and evaluating rational functions. Groups of students will work through sample problems and present their work.

Teacher I
LESSON PLAN FOR GENERAL MATHEMATICS GRADE 11

Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of rational functions.
Performance Standard:
The learner is able to accurately formulate and solve real-life problems involving rational
functions.
Learning Competency:
The learner represents a rational function through its table of values, graph and
equation. M11GM - 1B – 4

I. OBJECTIVE
At the end of discussion, the learners are able to do the following with at least 75%
level of accuracy:
a. define rational function
b. represent real life situation using the concept of rational function through its table
of values, graph and equation
c. solve problems involving rational function

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Rational Function
References: Teaching Guide for Senior High School: General Mathematics
(Core Subject) Chapter 2: Rational Functions
: Curriculum Guide for Senior High School: General Mathematics

Materials: TV, Laptop, visual aids

III. PROCEDURE
A. ACTIVITY:
a. Checking of attendance.
b. Cleanliness of the room.
c. Presentation

Tell whether each of the following function is a rational function.

3
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 4. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 −4 + 5𝑥 2 + 𝑥 = 1
𝑥+2
𝑥−2 2𝑥
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = + 5. 𝑓(𝑥) = √3𝑥
1+2 𝑥−2
1
3. 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 2
B. ANALIZATION
C. ABSTRACTION
Rational function is a function that can be written as the quotient of two
polynomial functions. Many real-world problems require us to find the ratio of two
polynomial functions. Problems involving rates and concentrations often involve
rational function.

D. APPLICATION
The teacher will group the class into four. Each group will be given question. One in
each group representative will picked question that they would be answering and
explaining their answer in front.
Questions:
1. In an interbarangay basketball league, the team from Barangay Matalang has
won 12 out of 25 games, a winning percentage of 48%. We have seen that they
need to win 8 games consecutively to raise their percentage to at least 60%.
What will be their winning percentage if they win
(a) 10 games in a row? (b) 15? 20? 30? 50? 100 games?
2. Ten goats were set loose in an island and their population growth can be
approximated by the function
60(𝑡+1)
𝑃(𝑡) = ⌊ 𝑡+6 ⌋
Where P represents the goat population in year t since they were set loose.
Recall that the symbol ⌊. ⌋. denotes the greatest integer function.
a) How many goats will there be after 5 years?
b) What is the maximum goat population that the island can support?

3. The electric current I (in amperes) passing through a resistor is related to the
voltage V across a resistor (in volts) and the resistance R (in ohms) by the
formula I = V R. If the resistor is connected across the terminals of a car battery
(12 volts), construct a table of values of the current across the resistor for
different resistor values from 2000 ohms to 5,000 ohms. Use intervals of 1000
ohms. Plot these values as points in the Cartesian plane and connect the points.
Is this a smooth curve or a straight line?
𝑥−3
4. Construct a table of values for the function 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥+4 for −6 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2, x taking
on integer values. Identify values of x where the function will be undefined. Plot
the points corresponding to values in the table. Connect these points with a
smooth curve. Explain why the points cannot be joined by a single curve?

TOTAL SCORES

After 10 minutes, the work will be checked by the teacher soliciting ideas from the class whether
each group got all correct ideas or answers.

IV. EVALUATION

𝑥 2 +𝑥−6
Solve the rational function 𝑓(𝑥) =
𝑥 2 +𝑥−20

a) Construct a table of values for −6≤x≤2 where x takes on integer values

b) Plot and sketch the graph of the function.
c) Identify values where the function will be undefined.

V. ASSIGNMENT
What are the properties of rational function?

(b) 15? 20? 30? 50? 100 games?

The team still cannot reach a 100% winning percentage. Note that the denominator
25 + x is greater than the numerator, so 100% cannot be achieved. This is reasonable,
since the team has lost 13 games already, so they cannot be perfect".

values. Identify values of x where the function will be undefined. Plot the points corresponding to
values in the table. Connect these points with a smooth curve. Explain why the points cannot be
joined by a single curve?

The points cannot be joined by a single curve because f is not defined at x = −4. It has a
vertical asymptote there.
