Just Because
Rebecca Elliott
Amusing and often touching, this story encompasses the issue of dis-
ability in a charming celebration of sibling friendship to which all chil-
dren can relate
“Truly lovely. . . . It is indeed for all readers, all children and all
adults. It shows children what’s possible and it puts adults in a po-
sition in which we can see and understand everyone, not just the
so-called able-bodied. It’s fun, it’s rhythmic, it’s thoughtful.”
—Michael Rosen, children’s poet and former UK Children’s Laureate
“This delightful, warm, beautifully illustrated picture book de-
serves a place on every bookshelf.” —Jacqueline Wilson, author,
Girls in Love
My big sister Clemmie is my best friend. She can’t walk, talk, move around
much, cook macaroni, pilot a plane, juggle or do algebra. I don’t know
why she doesn’t do these things. Just because.
A younger brother describes all the fun he has with the big sister he loves
so much—just because, in this heartwarming picture book about being
perfectly loved, no matter what. He is enthusiastic about just how lov-
ing and special she is, and delights in telling us about all the fun things
they do together. Only as his tale unfolds does the reader begin to real-
ize that his sister has special needs—and by then the reader just accepts,
as he does, all the wonderful things about her. Teachers and librarians
will appreciate this book for its sincere and convincing treatment of chil-
dren with special needs, while parents will use this book to encourage
sibling friendship and to read with children who are beginning to ask
why a particular child they know is “different.”

from the author of Giraffes Can’t Dance, with a hero
who flosses his teeth with slugs
“The most revolting picture book of the year . . . chil-
dren will absolutely love it.” —Bookseller
Meet Morris, the world’s stinkiest picture book hero. It’s
been years since he last changed his T-shirt. It’s crusty and
crawling with ants. His shoes are all slurpy and squelchy
inside, and potatoes grow out of his pants. Morris is sweet,
charming . . . and completely disgusting. Kids will love him.

Molly and the Night Monster
Chris Wormell
From a much-loved, award-winning children’s illustrator
comes a soothing bedtime story with a big, reassuring hug
of an ending
“There is about a score of children’s book illustrators
nowadays whose draughtsmanship is really distinguished.
Chris Wormell is one of them.” —Sunday Times
“What makes this book stand out is Wormell’s monochro-
matic night scenes, which emphasize the darks and lights
of the moonlit bedroom. An atmospheric and reassuring
tale.” —Bookseller
“There’s a three-dimensional quality to the art; holding
this book is almost like turning over old-fashioned, chunky
alphabet blocks.” —New York Times on Teeth, Tails, and
Tentacles
When Molly wakes up in the middle of the night, she hears the
sound of a step on the stairs. It could be a crocodile creeping
up to catch her. Or maybe it’s a giant giraffe outside on the land-
ing. Or possibly it’s an enormous elephant turning the doorknob
and opening the door. Perhaps it’s a night monster come to gob-
ble her up. But when Molly surprises the tiptoeing beast, she gets
an even bigger surprise of her own!
Chris Wormell is a celebrated wood engraver and illustrator whose book Teeth, Tails, & Tentacles was
named a New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Children’s Book, an American Library Associa-
tion Notable Book, and a Kirkus Reviews Editor’s Choice. His other titles include Ferocious Wild Beasts!;

by a loud croaking noise from among the lily pads. It’s the frogs, and
they want to join in! But the bear and his friends don’t fancy putting

the frogs can help them.

Moon Zoo
Carol Ann Duffy
Illustrations by Joel Stewart
A lunar landscape is the setting for a very special zoo where elephants’ “trunks
are telescopes probing space, pointing up at the Earth’s blue face” and ba-
boons “jump twenty feet into outer space and flash their bottoms at the
human race!”
The moon tiger scratches at shooting stars, polar bears float down from their
mountain for starfish and salad, and the zookeeper, of course, is an alien, com-
plete with eight bright green hands. Lyrical, humorous verses illuminate an en-
trancing world that is both familiar and strange, while soft-toned, wonderfully
strange illustrations capture the eerie beauty of the moon zoo.

Snoring Beauty
Rachael Mortimer
Illustrations by Amanda Hellberg
Who can get the princess to stop sawing logs in this fabulously funny and
witty take on a well-known fairy tale?
One day the King and Queen are woken up in the middle of the night by the
most terrifying noise. They search the palace from top to bottom before they
discover the source of the deafening din—their daughter’s snores! The Princess
simply will not be woken and, before long, everything has decended into chaos

snoring. Who will manage to save the kingdom from the super snores—Chief

but what’s so great about a horse? Isn’t a dog good enough?
This story is an energetic romp through a dog’s busy day on a farm. Russ, the
sheepdog, herds sheep and cows and plots against Tigger, the farm cat. He cov-

secret is the hardest task of all!

cupcake recipe.” —Booklist
“A popular Australian illustrator demonstrates that she can also spin a good
yarn.” —Booklist on Jack Jones and the Pirate Curse
“Rossell makes Benito positively adorable. . . . Her piney woods are suffused with
a soft light; even when a skewed overhead perspective emphasizes Benito’s uneasi-
ness, they’re still a comfortable place for small children to be.” —Kirkus Reviews
on Too Tight, Benito!
One day, Leonard had an idea. He whispered his plan to Ruby. “But it’s a surprise,”
he said. “So we can’t tell the others?” asked Ruby. “That’s right,” said Leonard.
In this delightful story of friendship, Leonard wants to make a birthday cake for Ruby,

Imagine a disused living room in a grand house. In it is a tiger rug and a
statue of a little girl. But is the tiger a real tiger, a fake, or a magical car-
pet? Is the little girl real but bewitched, or just a stone statue, and will she
ever come to life? By turns comical and lugubrious, the tiger gives the lit-
tle girl plenty of versions of the truth, but how will she decide what is true
and will she be able to break free? A parable about outgrowing childhood
and becoming what you want to be, this is a book for anyone who has ever
felt “stuck” in their circumstances.

Count Them While You Can . . .
Anne Bowman
It is said that as many as 150 species become extinct every day—this book inspires
children to help take a stand in reducing that number
Taking the reader on a trip around the world to meet 10 endangered animals whose
futures hang in the balance, this highly illustrated book travels from the snow leop-
ard in the Himalayas to the black-footed ferrets in the prairies of Wyoming and South
Dakota to show a wide array of animals on the countdown to extinction—some of
which are already extinct in the wild. Using a combination of counting verses and straight
facts, it highlights the struggles the animals face to educate children and inspire them
to help. Each animal is accompanied by a gentle verse in the style of the traditional
song “Over in the Meadow” that describes the habits of these creatures, while infor-
mation boxes point out the bleak facts of their near extinction.
Anne Bowman is an award-winning illustrator who has made and fitted radio-track-
ing devices for the grey-headed flying fox fruit bat native to Australia and worked as
a freelance model maker for Australian Geographic, the National Parks and Wildlife

Royal Whippet, some very aggressive lavatories, and a very spoiled and unpleasant once

world: his name was Arthur. This king lived in the great castle of Camelot on the beautiful is-

legends is that every time their stories are told they become more and more fabulous, so useless
twits are often turned into super heroes. This is not one of those stories. This is the true story of
King Arthur—who was most definitely not a super hero. He was a nasty little spoiled brat who
nobody could stand—or was he?

whose noble quest seems to make no sense. Relentlessly pursued by the emperor’s own airships,
they fly over the perilous Wasteland, where corrupted demons lie in wait. When Lenis dreams
of Apsilla, the blue dragon of the east, the captain decides to help the twins find Apsilla’s
daughter. The survival of the last totem may be their only hope—but will they find Apsilla’s
egg in time, or will their enemies find them first?

Tallow
Karen Brooks
The first book in a captivating new science fiction series tells a story of intrigue, deadly
magic, and a love so deep it transcends life itself
“The first in a trilogy, there are echoes of Lord of the Rings, but this is so much eas-
ier to read. Tallow is a layered character, as is the book. Throughout this first vol-
ume, there are many surprises, twists, and turns to keep the reader hooked.”
—Australian Booksellers and Publishers
“Karen Brooks’ novel is one that will leave you wanting more but at the same time
have you questioning the depths human beings are willing to go to in order to
achieve the hidden desire. . . . If you have never read a fantasy novel, Tallow is where
you should start.” —Fantasy Book Review
The next installment of the Curse of the Bond Riders trilogy will be Votive
(9781864719437), due out October 2011
On the edge of a mystical border called the Limen, close to a beautiful canal-laced city, a
humble candlemaker rescues a child whom he raises as his apprentice. Years pass and the
child's unusual talents are revealed, the gentle art of candlemaking slowly transforming
into something far more sinister. Lingering in the shadows, enemies watch and wait—a
vengeful aristocrat, an exotic queen, and the lethal creatures known only as the Morte Whis-
perers. They hunger after the child's ancient magic and will do anything to control it—
betray, lie, manipulate—even murder. In a world of darkness, there is one who will bring
light, but can the child survive long enough to fulfil that destiny?

The Red Dress
Gaby Halberstam
Set in 1944 in the sweltering South African wilderness, this is a powerful coming-of-age
story about family and first love
“Halberstam’s writing is both sensitive and exciting.” —Telegraph on Blue Sky Freedom
It was like looking into the crimson depths of a giant poppy. Rifke pulled off her old clothes
and slipped the dress over her head, feeling its petal-soft fabric caress her skin. She darted
a glance at Ma. Her mouth was set in a straight line. Still she said nothing.
The argument over the red dress is the final straw for 14-year-old Rifke. Fed up with stuffy
Johannesburg and her crabby, difficult mother, she snaps and recklessly boards a train out
of town—but her fantasy escape doesn’t go exactly to plan, and Rifke ends up in the middle
of nowhere. With no train home for 30 days, she is forced to stay with the mysterious and
unwelcoming van Niel family on their run-down farm, and suddenly her old life doesn’t
seem so bad.
Gaby Halberstam was born in a small mining town in South Africa, but now lives in London.
She is the author of Blue Sky Freedom.

About a Girl
Joanne Horniman
A spellbinding, dreamy love story between two young women that unfolds like a series
of paintings
“Horniman’s writing is elegant, with a flowing language that embodies the mood of a
lazy summer day.” —School Library Journal on Secret Scribbled Notebooks
“Horniman shines a light of realism on the two sides of the many struggles teen par-
ents face.” —Kirkus Reviews on Little Wing
I remember when we lay together for the first time and I closed my eyes and felt the crackle
of her dark hair between my fingers. She was all warmth and sparking light. When I was
with her, my skin sighed that the center of the world was precisely here.
Anna is afraid she must be unlovable—until she meets Flynn. Together, the girls swim, eat
banana cake, laugh, and love. Some days Flynn is unreachable; other days she’s at Anna’s
door—but when Anna discovers Flynn’s secret, she wonders if she knows her at all. This beau-
tifully crafted novel explores the tension between the tender moments that pull people together
and the secrets that push them apart.

dreds of miles apart—yet their lives are linked in ways they can barely imagine. Could Louise’s

truth in their own unique ways. Set in the near future, this intriguing book explores the all-

Juicy Moments from My Impossible Life
Steven Herrick
A funny, refreshing look at the most awkward time in any young boy’s life—from school,
girls, and parties to parents, friends, and the dreaded “sex talk”
"Darcy’s first-person narrative is sharp, reflective and witty delivering a simple tale
that is fast paced but laced with poignant moments . . . The serious teenage issues of
bullying, friendship, teen and family relationships are tackled but without the angst . . .
students of both genders will enjoy this uplifting coming-of-age novel. A must for the
collection." —Magpies
“Rich, layered verse reminiscent of works such as Sonya Sones’ Stop Pretending.”
—Booklist starred review on Love, Ghosts & Facial Hair and A Place Like This
Darcy Walker is a normal 16-year-old boy—but he can handle that. He can even cope with
parents, deal with parties, and soldier through the occasional fight. He’s certainly got his in-
fatuation with the beautiful Audrey under control, is clearly the best at spending quality chess-
time with his nerdy best friend, Noah, and doesn’t blink an eye at the misadventures that
can occur when kayaking on a school excursion. He’s a teenage boy—he can handle anything.
That is, if only he’d learn to keep his mouth closed first.
Steven Herrick is one of Australia’s most popular poets. He has been been short-listed for the
Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year award on six occasions and he has
twice won prizes in the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards. His books for teens include
A Place Like This; Do-Wrong Ron; Kissing Annabel; and Love, Ghosts, & Facial Hair.

Kyra Karmiloff
Useful and unique insights into the psychology, behavior, and development of babies—
perfect for any new parent
Babies arrive in the world already equipped with many skills, reflexes and instincts that help

their physical and social environments through a combination of interaction, experience, trial
and error, and nurturing. It is divided into five sections dealing with different aspects of a
baby's life, from birth through to toddler years. Throughout, there are helpful tips and sug-
gestions about how parents can positively influence their child's journey towards independence
through a better understanding of the world from a baby's perspective
