(c) The Electrical Code states the following: “For a domestic cooking appliance
The current assessment is: The first 10A of the rated current plus 30 per cent of the
remainder of the rated current plus 5A if a socket outlet is incorporated in the
cooker control unit”

Determine the circuit rating for a 240V, 12 KW cooker controlled by a unit having
a 13A socket outlet incorporated

An electric iron is designed to operate on a 110 V supply. But the iron is


connected to a 120V supply.

Calculate:

(a) The percentage increase in heat energy developed in the iron

(b) The resistance necessary so that the iron can operate properly on the 120V supply

(b) Draw a circuit diagram of the new arrangement, given that the rating of the iron is
110 V and 850 watts

the relay is energized. The other lamp must be on when the relay is dc-energized

(a) Define the terms ‘dead’ and earth as applied to electrical installations.

(b) What factors must be considered when selecting cables/conductors for a


particular task.

(a) A distribution system is fed from both ends as shown in figure 11.1.
Given that the line resistance send and return is 0.0025 per meter and the
currents and distances are as shown in figure 11.1

Determine

(b) Using neat diagrams show how you can use a VOM to test a 110V/12V, 60W,
50Hz transformer. State the results expected for a good transformer.

(c) The colour code on a resistor is Black, Yellow, Green and Gold. Estimate its
value using the colour code and show how this value can be checked by the
Voltmeter, Ammeter method.

(a) Given that a moving coil ammeter has an internal resistance of 0.315 and
a full scale deflection of 32 mA, determine the value of resistance needed to
convert the instrument to measure:

(i) 100A dc

(ii) 150V dc
Draw suitable wiring diagrams in each case.

(b) You are required to connect a 30Hp, 3, 440V, 50Hz motor to a source of supply.
If the motor is located 10m from the source, and we assume a starting current of
two times running current. Determine the minimum size of cable and circuit
breaker for this installation.

(c ) List four advantages and two disadvantages of underground distribution systems

Question 13

(a) With the aid of suitable diagram explain the principle of operation of an
incandescent lamp. What is the advantage of this lamp over the fluorescent lamp?

(b) A residential load consist of the following:-

2 - 220 V / 40 A / 2  load
1 - 220V /10 KW, Electric store
12 - 110 V / 20 W lamps
6 - 220V, 250W Sodium Lamps
5 - 10 V /15 A outlets

 Draw a detail wiring diagram of the installation


 Assuming a distance of 5m, use the table provided to select suitable conductors for the
main.

Question 14

(a) A single phase motor takes 8.3A at a power factor of 0.866 lagging when connected to a
230V,50 Hz supply. Two similar capacitors are connected in parallel with each other to
form a capacitor bank. This capacitor bank is now connected in parallel with the motor
to raise the power factor to unity. Determine the capacitance of each capacitor.

(b) Design a full-wave rectifier to supply 12Vdc / 60W from a 110V supply, identifying all
the components used giving their function and specification.

(c) Explain using the human body as a resistance, the importance of earthing all metals that
are not current carrying conductors in an installation.

(b) The position of fuses ,non-linked switches and non-linked circuit breakers.

(a) Three (3) lights, each controlled by a single pole switch.

IEE or JS21 regulation prescribe that consumer's main switch gear shall provide means
of interrupting the supply in the event of excess current or dangerous earth
leakage current Isolation. Describe equipment which will meet these requirements, and
show in each case how the regulation will be satisfied.
