History of Physical Therapy

Physical therapy aims to develop, maintain, and restore maximum movement and function through treatment and rehabilitation. Physical therapists work in various settings like outpatient clinics, schools, and home health to promote wellness, prevent disability, and treat injury and disease using techniques like exercise and manual therapy. The profession has evolved from non-licensed practitioners treating polio in the early 1900s to requiring degrees and licensure. Physical therapists now have expanding roles like education, research, and interprofessional collaboration.
