This article discussed the transition of three 6
grade science teachers to STEM teaching. The
goal of STEM teaching is to allow students to use project-based learning to solve real-world
problems. One of the main challenges one of the teachers faced during this transition was finding
purpose in lessons while giving the students space for independent thinking. After one of the
worst grading quarters she had ever had, she almost gave up on STEM teaching. When she met
with STEM instruction to observe their teaching, she found an emphasis on problem-based and
project-based lessons that had been missing in her classroom. We used what she had learned
from her experience in the lesson we developed by incorporating a hands-on project in our
lesson. Our topic was volcanoes, so after we taught the students our lesson, we had our students
split into groups and make model volcano eruptions.

Journal Article Two: Oakley STEM Center offers Interactive Programs for Children and
Families
This article discusses a similar program to Purdues College Mentors for Kids at Tennessee Tech
University. They offer a program for students in grades four through twelve to participate in
STEM activities with their parents. Every Friday, the students and their parents come to the
university and participate in interactive experiences where they learn about science and
technology in fun project-based activities. We used the same strategy when creating our lesson
plan. We chose to incorporate a project in our lesson to make it a hands on experience for our
students.
