2 Formulas and Density
8/20, 8/21 Catalyst Pick up YOUR portfolio, notebook, whiteboard, and sit in your seat. Answer the following questions on a new left page in your science notebook: 1. What is the definition of density? 2. What is the formula for density? 3. What are the 3 states of matter? Topic of the Day: 1.2 Formulas and Density Vocabulary: Formula, Constant, Unit, Density Date: 8/20 (A) or 8/21 (B) Objectives I can define formula, unit, constant and density. I can identify information and plug it into a formula. I can use a formula to calculate density. I can explain how the density of an impure substance changes with volume. I can explain how to use different formulas.
Topic of the Day: 1.2 Formulas and Density Date: 8/18(A) or 8/19(B) Last class, what did we use to determine density? Investigation: Density Liquid Mass (g) Volume (mL) Density (g/mL) Observation Liquid Plumber 19.34g 16 1.20875g/ml Smells bad, clear water Pine Sol 36.68 g 39 mL .99 g/mL Yellow liquid Milk 28.3 28ml 1.01 white/clumpy Ammonia 59.9g 60ml 0.98g/ml clear Distilled Water 10 g 10 mL 1 g/mL clear liquid Vinegar 8.345 g 8 mL 1.073 g/mL clear liquid, dank Topic of the Day: 1.2 Formulas and Density *Essential Question: How is density calculated in different substances?* A. What is density? 1. Density is a measure of how tightly packed particles are in an object. B. What is a particle? 1. Particle: smallest constant unit of matter. Note: We usually represent particles as circles or spheres C. Does density change in an object? 1. Pure substances made up of only one type of particle The density does not change with volume WHY? 2. Impure substances made up of more than one type of material (mixtures) The density does change with volume. WHY? Does density change in an object? D. What is the formula for density? D = m v
1. D = Density Units = g/mL or g/cm 3
2. m = mass Unit = grams (g) 3. V = volume Unit = mL or cm 3
1 mL = 1 cm 3
How do I use a formula (to calculate density)? G.U.E.S.S. 1. Identify the given numbers with unit. 2. Identify your unknown, what are you solving for? 3. Decide what equation to use. Pick the equation/formula that has only the ONE UNKNOWN youre looking for AND you have values for every other variable Note: you may have extra numbers! Dont worry. 4. Substitute the numbers into the equation (formula) in the SAME order as given in the equation. 5. Solve for your unknown- make sure your answer has a unit!!! Example #1: A student determines the volume of an unknown liquid to be 93.5 mL. If the mass of the sample is 75.6 g, what is the density of this sample? 1. Given: V = 93.5 mL, m = 75.6 g 2. Unknown: Density or D 3. Equation: D = m/V 4. Substitute: D = 75.6 g / 93.5 mL 5. Solve: D = 0.809 g/mL
What is the density of water? Will this sample float or sink when placed in water?
FLOAT!! 1 g/mL Example #2: Platinum is known to have a density of 21.46 g/cm 3 . If a student has a 4.5 cm 3 sample of pure platinum, what is the mass of the sample? 1. Given: V = 4.5 cm 3 , D = 21.46 g/cm 3
2. Unknown: mass or m 3. Equation: D = m/V 4. Substitute: 21.46 g/cm 3 = m / 4.5 cm 3
5. Solve: D = 96.6 g or 97 g
What is the density of water? Will this sample float or sink when placed in water?
1 g/mL SINK!! White Board Practice #1: A student calculates the volume of a 45.1 g sample of gold to be 2.33 cm 3 . What is the density of gold? 1. Given: V = 2.33 cm 3 , m = 45.1 g 2. Unknown: Density or D 3. Equation: D = m/V 4. Substitute: D = 45.1 g/ 2.33 cm 3
5. Solve: D = 19.4 g/mL
What is the density of water? Will this sample float or sink when placed in water?

Independent Practice Complete the problems on your worksheet ON YOUR OWN for the first 10 minutes! For the second 10 minutes you may talk to your partners to help you through your work! If you have a question 1. Look at your beautiful notes 2. Ask a peer for a clarification or explanation (you wont learn if you just copy answers!) 3. Raise your hand and Ill come by! (But only if youve done 1 and 2 first! ) When you finish your practice packet, complete the vocabulary words for today! Summary Copy and use the following sentence stems to summarize the main points from today. Today we learned about ____________. Density is _________________. When using a formula to calculate density I learned that _______. Exit Ticket Use the following data table of known densities to help answer questions 3 and 4.
