Exercise 1
Microsoft Exchange Server 2007: Management Console and
Shell
Scenario
In this exercise, you will use the Exchange Management Console to perform common administrative tasks. You are
the Exchange administrator at Northwind Traders. The company recently implemented Exchange Server 2007, and
you would like to take a tour of the features of the new Management Console and Shell. In particular, you would
like to create mailboxes for both new and existing users in the Console. Also, you wish to configure a retention
policy in which all items in the users’ Inboxes expire after seven days.

j. In the First name box, type Dan.
k. In the Last name box, type Park.
l. In the User logon name box, type Dan.
m. In the Password and Confirm Password boxes, type P@ssw0rd and then click
Next.
n. In the Mailbox Setting dialog box, click Next.
o. In the New Mailbox page click New.
p. On the Completion page, click Finish.
Note: In the Result Pane, notice that a mailbox has been enabled for Dan Park.
Note: If you receive an error that states the wizard failed, close the wizard and open
a command prompt window and enter the following commands, each on a separate
line:
net stop dns
net start dns
net stop msexchangeis
net stop msexchangesa
net start msexchangeis
When the commands above are completed, close the command prompt window, and
repeat Steps e through p above.
2. Enable a mailbox for a. In the Exchange Management Console, in the Action Pane, click New Mailbox.

d. On the Introduction page, in the E-mail life cycle content settings name text box,
type Delete after 7 days.
e. In the Message type drop-down list, select All Mailbox Content.
f. Select the Messages expire after (days) check box and then type 7 in the text box.
Note: Note that in the real world, you would set this to a higher number such as 60
days. The seven-day expiration period is set for lab purposes only.
g. In the Expiration period starts list, verify that When the item is delivered to the
mailbox is selected.
h. In the Action to take when message expires list, verify that Move to the Deleted
Items folder is selected and then click Next.
i. On the AutoCopy page, click Next.
j. On the New Content Settings page, review the summary, and then click New.
k. On the Completion page, click Finish.
l. In the Result Pane, select the E-mail Life Cycle Mailbox Policies tab.
m. In the Action Pane, click New E-mail Life Cycle Mailbox Policy.
n. On the New Mailbox Policy page, type Inbox (Management) for the E-mail life
cycle mailbox policy name.
o. Click Add, click Inbox, and then click OK.
p. Click New, review the Completion summary, and then click Finish.
5. Link the new E- a. In the Exchange Management Console, in the navigation tree, click Recipient
Mail Life Cycle Configuration, in the Results Pane, click Peter Houston, and then in the Action

c. Select the ELC mailbox policy checkbox and then click Browse.

click OK three times to return to the Exchange Management Console.
e. Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, and then click
Exchange Management Shell
f. At the MSH prompt, type set-mailboxserver -id SMBEX01
-ManagedFolderAssistantSchedule "Sun.12:00-Sun.11:00" and then press
ENTER.
g. At the MSH prompt, type net stop msexchangemailboxassistants and then press
ENTER.
h. At the MSH prompt, type net start msexchangemailboxassistants and then press
ENTER.
6. Test the Inbox a. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Internet Explorer.
