Scenario
Yanerbie is a small country township that historically has supported itself
with tourism dollars from its beautiful natural landscapes and national
parks centred on its coastline. It is a popular place for people looking for a
sea-change and retirees. It is large enough to support conveniences like a
small cinema but not big enough to attract larger industries. Recently a
private company has put a proposal to the town council to build a rehab
centre. This rehab centre will be the largest in Australia and will service
the surrounding areas, some which have high populations of ice users. It is
believed the relative isolation and calming natural backdrop will be
soothing to in-patients and help them separate from their old lifestyle and
destructive habits. This has been a topic of heated discussion for some
weeks now. Supporters argue it could bring money and jobs into the
community while opponents worry about the disruption to their way of life.
The council will make a ruling on the bid in the next fortnight and has
asked for community feedback. Recently The Advertiser ran a two page
article on this development that encouraged many of the locals to voice
their opinions as letters to the editor.
